Opera zygote processes continue to run when I close Opera and fails to restart until I run
"killall opera-beta" twice.
Disabling flash plugin fixes.
Anyone else get this?

If I understand you correctly, when you run the launcher opera opens 2 tabs.
To avoid this, in opera "Settings > On startup" set it to "Open the start page".
When using Ubuntu you could also add a quicklist to your normal opera launcher.
Copy the opera launcher from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications

What I want to know is where are the preferences for this.
I don't need opera to hold my hand.
In google-chrome there are settings in privacy to enable-disable these sort of web services.
Why does opera give me a malicious malware warning on certain sites.

Found what was wrong.
I had made a custom launcher @ ~/.local/share/applications/opera-developer.desktop with an exec line.....
Exec=opera-developer ....Seems the %U is needed.
eg Exec=opera-developer %U
When opera-developer is not open the link opens in background but if already open the new window opens in foreground.
I'll work on that but at least it's opening.

Created a new Ubuntu user account and works there.
Back in my usual account, renamed my ~/.config/opera-developerfolder, so as at next start opera-developer will load using the default config.
Still just opens a blank tab.
So opera-developer appears to be OK and it's some other setting in my normal user account.
If I have a web address such as http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/ in gnote or another
application clicking on this will open it in the default browser.
This will work when the default browser is set to firefox, google-chrome, chromium, opera 12.16, or midori.
When the default browser is set to opera-developer (Version:28.0.1750.11) it just opens a blank tab.
Start opera with
opera-developer --force-native-window-frame=true
The grab area will be decided by whatever gtk theme your using.

Unsorted? My Speed Dial is organized in folders. It's only 1 level deep, but it can be sorted...

Well we don't share the same opinion.
The thumbnails are useful even on non-touch, mouse pointer only computer. They make it easier to spot and recognize the pages you stored than a favicon+title traditional kind of sorting.
It makes managing sessions more efficient for me.
If you like other Opera functionality but isn't happy with this set of bookmarking tools you can get an extension like "Neater Bookmarks" to add a button for displaying, searching and managing bookmarks. It isn't available on the Opera add-ons store, only in the Chrome extensions catalog, but there are ways to install it.
It's not about having a mouse triggered bookmarks menu, it's the stupidity of what I have to do
to get searchable bookmarks.
The speed dial is only useful for a limited number of bookmarks as it was designed for.
The only way for me to search my bookmarks in the address bar is to create a folder of my numerous bookmarks in speed dial.
It's pointless to use speed dial to fumble through hundreds of unsorted bookmarks so why make me clutter speed dial just so I can search my bookmarks in the address bar.
I have to import my bookmark folder to the speed dial to be able to search them from the address bar.
Besides gaining this search function, what's the point of cluttering the speed dial with a bookmarks
folder you will never browse because of the sheer size and the fact they are not organized alphabetically.

@sgunhouse there's no need to enable anything in opera:flags, please update your reference sheet!
Just go to Settings via Opera's menu. The option to enable the bookmarks bar will be there under user interface.
Or... Like myself, you could use the Speed Dial page to store, manage and search your "bookmarks". You can make folders by dragging and dropping an item over another, or right-click the tab bar to save all the open tabs as a Speed Dial folder. Typing in the URL/search bar will show the pages you saved there as suggestions.
Or, if you don't need sorting you can use Stash, and there's a flag to enable the address bar to suggest Stash items too.
What a painful way to implement bookmarks to satisfy touch devices at the expense of the traditional desktop.
I understand your solutions but isn't this just a compromise.
Isn't Speed Dial "a set of visual bookmarks that is displayed every time you open a new tab, giving you quick access to your favorite websites and extensions"....the key word here being favorite??
Isn't stash meant as a temporary store of a page you want to come back to but not permanently bookmark??
I thought these were enhancements to bookmarks, not a place to store all your bookmarks.
