[Solved]Opera taskbar shortcut creating separate taskbar tab when using--private?General
Hello,
I have been using Opera for years now, since Windows 8 days. I have always opened Opera from a custom shortcut in my taskbar. The shortcut used to run the following command:
"C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe" --private
Clicking it used to open my Opera window in the incognito mode like so:
However, inn Windows 11, when I click this icon, it creates a separate taskbar tab for the incognito mode as follows:
I have also tried using
-private
and-incognito
instead of--private
. However, the behavior doesn't change. those shortcuts also create separate taskbar tabs. Also, I have observed this behavior only with my Opera shortcut. My Google Chrome shortcut, functions without creating any additional taskbar tab. It runs the following command:
"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -incognito
Any help?

Ctrl+W on the last tab in a workspace closes the entire window instead of taking to previous workspace.Tab Islands, Tabs and Workspaces
Steps to reproduce:
- Open 2 workspaces (say, workspace 1, workspace 2)
- Have some tabs in both workspaces.
- Go to some tab in workspace 2 (without closing any tab in workspace 1)
- Keep closing tabs in workspace 2 using Ctrl+W
Ctrl+W on the last tab in workspace2 (after closing all other tabs in that workspace) closes the entire window instead of taking me to workspace 1.
I am using Opera One(version: 100.0.4815.76) on WIndows 10 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2965).

So, how do I mark this post as Solved?

RE: Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
@operauser1234567 this is most likely because Messenger in sidebar is preloaded. Please simply right-click on sidebar, uncheck Facebook Messenger and see if that helps.
@mbaluta Thanks so much sir/ma'am! It really seems to have stopped Opera from connecting to the FB servers in that range! And I don't have to wait to browse the Internet!
But it seems uncharacteristic to load only the Facebook Messenger and not Whatsapp & Telegram messengers...is Facebook also one of the funding sources for Opera?

RE: Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
There's this recent malware making your computer work as a node.
Another possibility could be that you or some of your utilities are/is logged to Facebook. A third party site like you're using and which uses your local storage or wants to constantly/regularly renew its cookies or something...
Try clean profile and clear cookies.
Check your browser starting shortcuts and stuff if they were not modified by something, just to stay in the clear.> > Another possibility could be that you or some of your utilities are/is logged to Facebook. A third party site like you're using and which uses your local storage or wants to constantly/regularly renew its cookies or something... > Just thought of it! If you're logged out from Facebook while that third party Scheisse had been previously logged with it, that thing might be trying and trying - and failing to - renew the cookies or its connection, or whatever. Just out of interest, should it's the case, try logging to Facebook and restart the browser. If no more problem, then that is the case.
Hey joshl!
Regarding the possibility of a malware, please suggest an antivirus which would be able to detect and remove it, if all it exists in my computer. I've tried with Kaspersky and MBAM, but the two came up clean...no detections whatsoever.
Could you please also clarify what you meant by a third-party site? An example would help...because from my viewpoint, every non-Opera website is a third-party site here. Also, as I said, I use Private mode as my default mode to surf the internet to stay clear of cached content related issues. The only website that I open in normal/regular mode is Feedly.
About starting from a clean profile: Clean profile helps. But only till the next update. So if I start working with a clean profile now, the behaviour would be normal...no instance of Opera connects to those Facebook server. However, come the next Opera update, and Opera would start connecting to Facebook servers again. This has been repeatedly proven to me over the past 4 Opera updates.
I've modified my browser shortcut to ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\launcher.exe" --private" to make sure that I use the Private mode by default. That way, I stay clear of cached content related issues.
I don't have any 3rd party app connecting to Facebook. Might you be referring to the Facebook messenger built into Opera? I cleared the browsing data (cache, cookies, history, passwords...everything!). Why's it still connecting to Facebook after having cleared everything?
Additionally, I tried this:
- In the regular/normal mode, I opened Facebook, logged into it and then logged out of it.
- In the regular/normal mode, then, I oped the Facebook messenger built into Facebook. Logged into it, and then logged out of it.
- Then I closed Opera and waited for all Opera.exe instances to die down in the Task Manager. Then, I opened an instance of Opera again.
However, even after doing this, Opera connects to the Facebook servers in 157.240.0.0 - 157.240.255.255 range...hogging down the bandwidth for minutes! I then cleared all the browsing data again...from the beginning of time. Then I restarted Opera. However, again, it connects to those very Facebook servers.
But I noticed something in this exercise...when I opened Facebook website, Opera didn't connect to the servers in 157.240.0.0 - 157.240.255.255 range. It was when I logged-in and logged-out of the FB messenger built into Opera that Opera started having conversation with the servers in 157.240.0.0 - 157.240.255.255 range. So, I think the culprit definitely is Opera's FB messenger. But nothing seems to be working in my case except a clean profile (which will only be a temporary measure till the next update, as has been proven 4 times already...)
What should I try next?

RE: Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
See this screenshot.
And did you check with your extensions disabled?
What is the behavior with a clean profile?Hey leocg!
Okay! So here are the results:
-
Disabling the extensions has no effect at all. Creating a standalong instance of Opera even after disabling the extensions connects to the facebook servers in the range 157.240.0.0 - 157.240.255.255.
-
Clean profile helps. But only till the next update. So if I start working with a clean profile now, the behaviour would be normal...no instance of Opera connects to Facebook. However, come the next Opera update, and Opera would start connecting to Facebook servers again.

RE: Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
Bookmarks shouldn't matter - unless he has an extension that checks his bookmarks for bad links. Do you have Facebook as a source for stories on the news page, perhaps?
Hi sgunhouse!
Here is the screenshot of my Personal News section. I only have 3 news sources (blogs.opera.com, blogs.opera.com/india, and Opera News (from Opera.com)). So none of them use Facebook.
Also, I have set "Check my sources for new content" setting set to "never". (see this screenshot) That's why there was nothing in my Personal News section.
And my extension list is as follows:
- Dashlane Secure Password Manager
- Download Chrome Extension
- Evernote Web Clipper
- Ghostery
- HTML5 Video Speed Control
- IDM Integration Module
- Stylish

RE: Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
Checkout your SETTINGS parameters, try the following: Settings>Basic>On Startup>Open a specific page or set of pages Set pages and see if a page set is pointing to Facebook.
Hi gcg1000!
See this screenshot.
It's set to "Open the start page".
Also, I would like to mention here that to prevent any issues occurring due to old cookies, or old cached data, I usually use Private mode. I've even modified my Opera shortcut's command to ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\launcher.exe" --private". So by default, I use Private mode, instead of normal/regular mode.

Any open tabs when Opera starts?
Hi leocg!
No open tabs whatsoever...except for the Start Page!
See this screenshot.
That's how the screen looks when Opera starts interacting with Facebook's servers (the server are always in this range 157.240.0.0 - 157.240.255.255).

RE: Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
Are you logged in to Facebook Messenger in the sidebar?
No. I checked.
I will accept that I logged in once. But I logged out of it back then itself because the amount of time it was taking to load up, I thought I was better to use Facebook's web interface itself. And when I open the Messenger from sidebar now, it asks me to sing-in. So I'm definitely not logged in to Facebook Messenger in the sidebar.

Why does Opera connect to Facebook servers every time its first instance/window is opened?Opera for Windows
I notice a unique behaviour with my Opera installation. The following are the steps that replicate this behaviour on my machine:
-
Boot the laptop.
-
Start Opera (be it in Private mode, or be it in regular/normal mode).
As this window opens, Opera.exe, for some reason, connects to Facebook servers (such as 157.240.189.17:443) and completely hogs down my bandwidth for about 2 minutes! I can't do anything for these 2 minutes...can't open any website...not even a something as light as google.com!
This behaviour is also replicated when I do this:
-
Close all instances of Opera. (wait till all Opera.exe processes disappear from the task manager's process list)
-
Start Opera (be it in Private mode, or be it in regular/normal mode).
However, this behaviour isn't replicated when I do this:
-
Have at least one previously opened Opera window (be that an old Private window, or, an old regular/normal window).
-
Launch a new Opera window (be it a new Private window, or a regular/normal window).
In this case, Opera doesn't connect to any Facebook server and doesn't hog down my bandwidth. I can start doing my work straight away in this new window.
Any explanations to this behaviour? How can I 'rectify' this behaviour?

RE: Opera 45.0.2552.812 hogging down bandwidth on first start after system boot.Opera for Windows
So essentially, we're back to where we started...I'll have to re-do everything and before next upgrade, take a backup, and see if that backup serves me right when the upgraded Opera gives me troubles again...is my understanding correct?
-
RE: Opera 45.0.2552.812 hogging down bandwidth on first start after system boot.Opera for Windows
Can't we find a permanent automated solution to this? Please @leocg?
Periodical profile back ups.
Hi zalex108!
I'm only moderately familiar with these jargons...could you please elaborate by what you meant by a 'profile backup'?
Are you suggesting that I take a backup of the profile folder before upgrading Opera? If yes, then I have this questions: When, after update, the newer version of Opera uses the same profile as the earlier version, can't we say that it's equivalent to using a backup profile with the new version?

Can't we find a permanent automated solution to this? Please @leocg?
I don't work for Opera neither I am a developer, so there is nothing I can do.
But what about using Sync?I am using Sync. That's why I was concerned when Syc didn't restore many of the changes I had made in Opera's default settings.
-
RE: Opera 45.0.2552.812 hogging down bandwidth on first start after system boot.Opera for Windows
Also, you mentioned that some of the settings & customization aren't synced. But my opera has upgraded since then to 45.0.2552.888 (PGO) and I didn't face any of those issues this time
And how it's related to sync?
When upgrading you should not lost anything.Ahh! My bad!
Anyhow. With this recent upgrade, I've run into the same trouble of Opera hogging down the bandwidth. However, this recent avatar of the issue is strange and peculiar because it doesn't happen when I open a 'regular' Opera window; however, it always appears when I open an InPrivate window of Opera (now, there's no need to reboot your computer...it happens every time I open an InPrivate window)!
So, I tried the same thing I did earlier...renaming the existing Opera profile folder to "Opera Stable.old" and then opening Opera. And again, it seems that this solution works...Opera no longer hogs down the bandwidth.
However, I'm faced with the immense task of having to reconfigure Opera all over again...settings, extensions, bookmarks.. Can't we find a permanent automated solution to this? Please @leocg?

RE: Opera 45.0.2552.812 hogging down bandwidth on first start after system boot.Opera for Windows
Telegram, Facebook Messenger etc aren't being shown in the Sidebar any longer.
Even being enabled?
Hi leocg!
No....what I meant was that I had them enabled earlier...before I upgraded to 45.0.2552.812. But after the upgrade, they're all disabled...I had to enable them manually to show up in the sidebar.
Also, you mentioned that some of the settings & customization aren't synced. But my opera has upgraded since then to 45.0.2552.888 (PGO) and I didn't face any of those issues this time (be it manually enabling the adblocker or having to change the keyboard shortcuts or having to manually enable the sidebar items). Were they part of the bug-fixes this time around?

RE: Opera 45.0.2552.812 hogging down bandwidth on first start after system boot.Opera for Windows
Try installing the extensions and then copy the 'Extensions Rules', 'Extensions State' and 'Local Extensions Settings' folders.
Ummm....didn't work..
Any other method? Also, I don't know why but even after adding the synchronisation account, not all settings are being synced to this new profile. These include:
- The speed dials...they're all gone...being shown under "Other Speed Dials" in the Bookmarks Manager.
- Native Adblocker is still disabled.
- I had changed some of the keyboard shortcuts. They're back to the default keyboard shortcuts.
- Telegram, Facebook Messenger etc aren't being shown in the Sidebar any longer.
- and a few more.
Oh well..I just changed the settings myself.
Thanks @leocg!
