Suggestion sum-up

Being able to switch off the sound of a specific tab, by clicking on the little animation which already exists on the tab icon when some sound is detected.

Problem description

In the current developer builds, we can now see a specific tab icon when there is some sound on a web page.
This is a great improvement, because automatic video adverts are now very common, and incredibly annoying.

However, not only some sounds are automatically played by some websites, but sometimes there is even no way to turn it off until the advert is finished!
If I don't want to close the tab, it may be great to be able to switch of the sound of a specific tab.

Use case example

• I am listening to spotify on a tab (so I don't want to mute all Opera using my OS)
• I open a tab with an automatically played video that I can't pause for a few seconds (annoying advert, for example)
• I want to mute this last tab until the advert is finished

Details

When you have a lot of open tabs, finding the one you want and you opened 10 min ago can be difficult.

To solve this problem, one of the existing solutions in Opera is the tab preview:

• either in the new tab menu from latest Opera discover
• either on tab hovering if option is enabled

Nevertheless, in both cases, when you look for a specific tab, you look to the preview, not to your mouse. So when you move the mouse cursor it may be quite annoying (loosing the focus because you leave the tab menu unintentionally, or because you're not in front of the tab bar anymore).

Proposition:

• Enable the mouse wheel to switch the preview from a tab to an other, without moving the mouse. This may work in both cases (tab menu and tab hovering)
• If you click on left button, the active preview becomes the active tab. Instead, if you just move the mouse, preview is cancelled and the active tab is not changed.

Each link is for a different artists page like artist01.deviantart.com, artist02.deviantart.com, and so on.
All with the same icon, no labels, searching for someone is a nightmare.

I think the main problem is that bookmarks and speed dial are nearly the same thing in current implementation.

In Opera 15+, speed dial has been designed as a way to replace bookmarks. But there were some flaws, you all know the story, and they decided to re-implement a "bookmark" feature. But IMHO, the strategy is now very confuse for a lot of users.

Kroppy, from what I see in your example, if you want to follow Opera's "new way of doing things", you should use bookmarks for your deviantart pages.
If you have a lot of things you want to store, to differentiate, to search and find later, different pages from the same website, etc... you should use bookmarks.

SpeedDial should only be used for a very (very!) few number of links, the most importants, the one you check 50% of the time when you open a new tab. All the rest should now be stored in bookmarks.

This is the way I see things, and it may explain why Opera does not implement preview again in speed dial: if so, why would we need bookmarks?
But I agree, there must be a way to optimize all this, it is too confusing for the moment. SpeedDial and bookmarks must really differ, or merge.

Rocker gesture was never used for tab cycling

It was not the "default config", but it could be used for tab cycling. In Opera 12, the rocker gestures (like any other gestures or shortcut) could be associated to any action.

So maybe it was not very clear in my previous post, but what I tried to explain is that I used to configure Opera that way, and I found rocket gestures really perfect for tab cycling.

Last try to enhance tab management was not very successful (tab preview, now disabled by default...).

Even if I personally think that this new tab preview was one of the good ideas of the "new" Opera, I definitely miss something way more powerful when we have a lot of open tabs. Tab stacking was really nice.

I remember having read somewhere that "decisions takers" at Opera think that customizing mouse gesture is too "geeky", and won't be implemented.
I just can not understand that argument, and I'm still waiting, waiting... and hoping they change their mind.

As explained in other topic, this is just an example, but I desperately want to be able to switch tabs (previous, next) with mouse gesture or rocker gesture. It's not "geeky", it's just incredibly more efficient and simple to use!

If you don't want to go too far in the "geeky customizations features"; please consider at least the one which have real impacts on every day habits and browsing efficiency!

Here is a simple reflexion:

On what should we focus ergonomy and efficiency improvements?

If we analyze the time we spend on a browser, there are surely a lot of different actions we do.
What is the action we do the most often?

Interaction with the webpage, for sure. Ok, but after that? I don't have any formal statistics, but I'm pretty sure it is the selection of a tab...

So even if improvements or developments in this area are small, they may have a huge impact on everyday browsing.

Moreover, what is the main link for interaction with the browser? Yes there is the keyboard, and yes keyboard shortcuts can be useful. But it often needs some effort from the user (move the hand, look for the key). I think that mouse is far more efficient for tasks we do very very often, at least for most of the people.

Propositions

Quite simple: :yes:

Re-implement one of these feature from Opera 12 (or both of them, or even an other and better idea, I don't care ^^ )

• Personalization of mouse gesture, with possibility to assign "tab switching" (previous and next). For example, I used rocker gesture for that, it was simple and very efficient
• Hold Right click and mouse wheel (never used it, but I guess it can be efficient as well)

For every day browsing, I still use Opera 12. To be honest, there are a lot of features I miss... but there is only one which is such a deal breaker that I can't switch to a more recent Opera, and it is explained just above.

It is still the main reason I don't switch to Opera 15+.
And I assume I'm not the only one: this item / request comes back again and again very often in the forum.

One example of the non logical default config:
You can already do previous/next with mouse gesture left/right. So why not redefine the rockergestures which do exactly the same thing?? (rocker gesture = hold one button and click the other)
This would be (much!! ) useful:

• RockerGesture to the left: switch to previous tab
• RockerGesture to the right: switch to next tab

Moreover, when you close a tab, I'm sure that very often your next action is to click on the tab bar to select an other tab, just because the new displayed one is not the one you wanted.
Why not let the user choose:

• Down->Left: close and switch to previous tab
• Down->Right: close and switch to next tab

Etc... These are examples of what I was used to on Opera 12, but of course it can be different for anybody. Customization was SUCH a great great great feature!!!

Tab preview is a step forward in tab management, but can't replace tab stacking when speaking about organization and clarity of display when a lot of tabs are opened...

I just clicked on the "Suggestion box" and saw your post ^^

When we use the tab preview, it is because we are looking for a specific tab out of a lot of other one... Our eyes are concentrated on the previews, and it would be much easier if the preview does not disappear when the mouse is hovering this "1 pixel" space at the top.

And, like caesyit91, I don't want to disable it.

But I never said they were not there... Maybe it wasn't very clear: what I wanted to mean is that they are not customizable. (like the other mouse gestures we were speaking about)

There isn't any possibility to do that anymore (since Opera 12.x I mean).

I agree with you, this is very sad, and a lot of users (like you and me) would like to see such a feature back.

I would really like the devs to reconsider their position about including this "too geeky" (so they say) feature.
There are so many shortcuts/mouse gestures/rocker gestures which can be much more easy / practical / productive than the originally included ones in Opera15+ !

Agree, and I even propose an other config that I used in Opera 12:

Rocker gestures:

• maintain left button and click on right to switch to next tab
• maintain right button and click on left to switch to previous tab

When you're used to it, it is so practical that I don't understand why it's not the default behaviour ^^

Yes and no...

When the window is not maximized, the tab bar is clearly separated from the "windows status bar". So having a different action between the tab bar (new tab) and the top status bar (maximize the window) would not be "less" native.

When the window is maximized, the behaviour is already "not" native because the status bar is used as a tab bar, which is not the standard Windows behaviour. So adding specific actions related to this "un-standard" behaviour seems to be quite relevant to me.
Moreover, there is this "1 pixel" space at the top of the windows, which I find very clever and very useful: it could still be used to maximize the window on Opera 12.

Maybe the real reason is the fact that it may not be as easy with Chromium than what it was in the past. Anyway the status is the same: it is not possible anymore.

And that's a shame, beacause I think it is really very frustrating to be forced to aim and click this tiny "+" on the tab bar... Double click was such a good idea!

I agree, I really miss that option too... but it is not possible anymore.

This question has already been asked multiple times, but they never really answered (at least to my knowledge).

The only thing I remember is that they made a poll months ago, and they were asking people what was their favourite way to open a new tab. Double click was in the top results list, so there may be something in the future. It's been while, though, and no news... Sadly.
