Yes Opera is Chromium-based, but it is open source and should be up to the developers at opera to change this code as they see fit, not just skin it with their own interface and blame the underlying code. I can see the point of keeping it the same as possible to chromium, but when features start to be become too intrusive or plainly don't work, then something should be done about it.

RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
I don't know if anyone did give up on Opera, I am sticking with it, the pros outweigh the cons.
I was looking through the opera://flags/ to see if there were any other tab settings in there that were causing problems, I came across this setting: 'Calculate window occlusion on Windows'
I googled it to find out some more info, there are a lot of stories on the issues this caused, here is one link:

In Opera 74.0.3911.218 it is enabled by default. -
RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
Well I did some tests... on the laptop I updated opera and installed the extension. Then opened 6 various tabs including Rollingstone, Amazon, Ebay, BBC News, I then left it going for just under 4 hours. On clicking each tab none were frozen.
OK I thought, maybe it hadn't run low enough on memory to do anything, so I opened a video converting program, windows explorer, plus another 6 tabs including YouTube, then left it for 30 mins.
Now when I clicked on the tabs they weren't frozen, but it sometimes took 2 ~ 3 seconds to redraw the tab. If I clicked along the row of tabs they would load up, and you could go back a few tabs ok but if you went right back to the first one it had to redraw again.I think this shows that it is very dependant on what hardware you have - ram, processor, graphics card memory & how many tabs you are clicking between as to whether you notice this happening.

RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
@wickedaunt It's difficult trying to replicate the problems other people are having with tabs snoozing, did you read through the earlier posts where I mentioned "the extension marks new tabs as not to be snoozed, it won't work on tabs that were already open"?
The PC tower I use has 16GB of ram installed, so I may be not getting any tabs that have to be snoozed because of low memory. I have an old laptop that only has 2GB of ram, I am going do some tests on there to see what happens, plus I can leave it going for longer as I am not using it. Will report back.

RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
@bigskytroutbum I opened your link and left it for 16 mins, clicked on the tab it was ok and not snoozed.
Not sure if you know this already, you can monitor what the current state of the discards are by typing opera://discards into the address bar - I was watching the Last Active time and Loading State of your site to see if it snoozed, but as it didn't the only info that changed in there was the Last Active time, so no clues there.
I use uBlock Origin ad blocker, do you use any blockers at all?
As well as uBlock, I have the built in ad blocker turned off, and block trackers turned on, Block third-party cookies selected (on), and Do Not Track is on.Update: I left the tab open while typing this reply, and twice it had not snoozed after another 18 mins + 13 mins.

@bigskytroutbum Thanks for your reply, just got back home. Glad it appears to be working so far.

RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
@bigskytroutbum You haven't wasted my time at all. I like digging into computer problems, and although I'm not a coder as such I have been around computers since the 80's and have picked up lots of useful tips and utilities, I still enjoy finding a fix for a problem.

RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
@bigskytroutbum I think they use the blog page for nothing more than announcements - that's if you actually get a post when they release an update, I check every time to see what is new or fixed.
I just clicked on all of those tabs, none were frozen and didn't refresh, they were still loaded and running OK. -
RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
@bigskytroutbum I have just opened those tabs, will leave them there to see if they snooze.
Another possibility on why they snoozed is that the extension marks NEW tabs as not to be snoozed, it won't work on tabs that were already open, so you would need to reload opera and all your tabs, or reload the just important ones.I got this info from the reviews of the extension: "if you read the extension source code, you'll see it tells Chrome to mark every opened tab as not auto-discardable."

RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
@bigskytroutbum Can you let me know which websites snoozed and I will try them on mine (I am not on Facebook or any other 'social' media shites)
I have 'Snooze inactive tabs to save memory' turned Off
Also 'Delay loading of background tabs' is turned Off
The only other setting I think may affect it is Workspaces, which is turned Off as I have never used it - Opera for Windows

@wickedaunt Try the extension, have had no problems with it, it just sits there doing its thing with no settings to worry about.

RE: Tab stacking, tiling and tab groupingSuggestions and feature requests
@davem
I searched for any extensions to view 2 tabs side by side (split screen) within the same window.
Couldn't find one but I came across this extension, Tab Resize by Peter Shin:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tab-resize-split-screen-l/bkpenclhmiealbebdopglffmfdiilejcPlease don't let the next bit put you off, I think its worth putting up with a minor irritation for the convenience it offers.
The extension is well laid out and easy to use, however in Windows 10 when splitting the tabs into windows there will be a small gap between them, you may not even find this distracting.
I found the fastest way to overcome this is to split the windows, drag the left window to the left so it maximises, then just click on the other window and it will maximise on the right side, no more gaps.
The best bit is when you are done, or if you make a mistake, you just click undo and everything is back where it started in one window. -
RE: Opera refreshing pages automatically if background tab left for a certain timeOpera for computers
I left a few tabs open for 3 hours with the extension running, no tabs were snoozed, I'm keeping it installed.
Get the extension here:

Tabs still being snoozed, so reinstalled Automatic Tab Discarding extension. Will report back later.

RE: Opera refreshing pages automatically if background tab left for a certain timeOpera for computers
Well, all was quiet on the tab snoozing front since my last post, even after Opera updated to 74.0.3911.107 – 2021-02-09.
Now today I only had two tabs open, and the tab I was using got snoozed, had only briefly gone to make a coffee. I closed that tab and the other one was snoozed as well.
I am going to keep my eyes on this, and if it happens again the extension is going back in. -
RE: Opera refreshing pages automatically if background tab left for a certain timeOpera for computers
@burnout426 I disabled the extension, turned Snooze inactive tabs on and off a few times and restarted Opera a few times. Tabs were not snoozing. I enabled Snooze tabs, but now tabs would not snooze. I removed the extension and changed the settings again, still no snoozed tabs.
What the hell is going on? -
RE: Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
I found an extension suggested by burnout426, Disable automatic tab discarding:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/disable-automatic-tab-dis/dnhngfnfolbmhgealdpolmhimnoliiok
I have installed it and is working fine, tabs are not being snoozed any more. I will test it further and report back if it stops working or any problems arise. -
RE: Opera refreshing pages automatically if background tab left for a certain timeOpera for computers
@burnout426 My Opera updated to version 74.0.3911.75, this introduced the "Snooze inactive tabs...." option which I found was snoozing tabs even if disabled.
I installed the "Disable automatic tab discarding" extension you suggested, it seems to be working ok - I will test it further and report back if it stops working or any problems arise. -
Tab Snoozing won't disableOpera for Windows
Well, you lot at opera have done it again.
I had previously posted about the Flash Player popup message (let us turn off that flash announcement popup) which finally sorted itself out when Opera updated to 74.0.3911.75.
But now, tabs are being snoozed regardless of whether the option is turned on or off in settings. So well done, you have replaced an annoying problem with a bloody annoying problem.Sort your act out.
By the way there is another post mentioning this and they are running Opera 75.0.3939.0 developer update, so this problem must have been around for some time.
