What I posted applies to the standalone Opera Mail application also. If you're replying in HTML mode, the insertion point for what you type will inherit the styles of the original message you're replying to. Doing that little trick should set the insertion point outside/above those styles so that Opera can honor what fonts you set.

When you reply to the message, what happens if you hit ctrl + home, backspace a couple of times, enter a couple of times, ctrl + home again and then start typing?

Does the text you type then come out right?
