MacOS 10.12 Sierra
About 2 weeks ago I installed Opera. I did do uisng an "admin" account on the Mac. There are several users on this Mac, who – of course – can use Opera now. However, these users are not granted admin access.
After a few days, Opera would repeatedly try to download and install a new version. Of course, this failed, since the particular users are not allowed to change anything in the /Application folder. Only when I ran Opera once from the admin account, the automatic update was successful. A few days later: The same game… etc. Very annoying, since the users were again and again experiencing pop-uo windows asking to enter the admin password.
In the meantime I was pointed to this old discussion:
After issueing the shell command
defaults write com.operasoftware.Opera OPDisableAutoUpdate true
in all user accounts, the process of automatic updating did not show up any more. Very good!
In the admin account, however, I'm still misssing an option to separate "checking for a new version" from "actually installing it". With other words: I want to be told if a new version is available, but I want to decide myself whether and when to install it.
An Opera user (not on my machine!) told me, that he has always experienced the latter behavior, ever since he has installed Opera on his Mac. However, I can't find anything in the settings menu to achieve this. Can you, please, enlighten me, how to do so? After all it seems to be possible.
Using the above preference setting in my admin account, too, is not a good idea, because it does not only suppress the auto-update feature; it will even prevent from checking for a new version.
