Yes I saw this in an older post on the subject, but it doesn't explain why my main computer does this fine with most website. For example I just created shortcuts to Microsoft and Amazon by going to the website and dragging off the address bar to my desktop and there is the microsoft logo and amazon logo. It doesn't work with Netflix, but that may be because their website doesn't provide one for Opera to use.

So although I hear what you are saying, that can't be the end of it, because if it works on one computer it should be able to work on one which is almost identical on the desk next to it!

Note to Opera people: I am an IT consultant and a programmer. Your installer is an absolute disgrace. I know this software is free, but that is no excuse for this nonsense:

I uninstalled Opera.
I downloaded the current version and ran the installer.
During install I clicked the tiny little almost invisible link for "Options"
Changed the "install for" to All users of this computer
Browse to the c:\program files folder for the "install path" - This Is Wrong . The idiot program does not create the "Opera Browser" folder for you within Program Files! I am utterly shocked by this. So you must first browse to your Program Files folder and manually create a folder called "Opera Browser" or something that makes it obvious what it is. Then browse to that folder in the installer and finish the install.

I am utterly gobsmacked at the unprofessionalism of this and it worries me greatly now, about other aspects of the software such as security.

Anyway, once the install is complete and I run the browser again, all my favourites etc. are still there so it must have imported them.

@leocg It's possible there was no sound; I had my speakers off at the time. I just assumed it did, because it used to.

We used to be able to turn this off, because it delays your web browsing while it self-promotes, so it is quite intrusive. It would be far better just to open the browser window and overlay a single line message on that and allow you to type in the search box while it informed of the update.

I shall try to find the suggestion option!

I found where to turn this off previously but it has just started doing it again and I definitely didn't turn it on again!

@vasco2020 You shouldn't have to manually create folders. The installer does that automatically.
When I first installed it it went into the appdata\local as you described and appdata\roaming (I believe) held the data. When I uninstalled and re-installed it, it put the program in c:\program files as expected and the data was left where it was in appdata\roaming. There appears to be some cache files in appdata\local too.

It now works for both users of that computer.

@vasco2020 I can only suggest you try it again and make sure you read the prompts thoroughly. It worked fine for me and now resides in c:\program files\opera on a 64 bit system

@vasco2020 You would need to not delete the configs, unless you have the data stored with an Opera account. I do, so not 100% sure what will happen in your scenario.

Further to this... On the disobedient computer, I just set Internet Explorer as the default browser and created three links using IE11, from Amazon, Microsoft and Netflix. They all produce icons as expected.

Then I set Opera back as the default browser and created the same three icons again and this time it made the correct ones for Amazon and Microsoft but Netflix still creates the big red O.

How very odd.

I guess I could do that each time I want to save a link to a website but it's incredibly clunky! I wonder why they don't want to fix this. I mean, it's not like web browsing is a new thing

Opera is the default browser.

In Regedit, HKCR, .URL has "OpenWithProgIds" of default containing (value not set)
and Internet Shortcut with no data.

It is showing the same info on the other computer too
