That's bad news. The mouse gesture for opening a link in a new tab (hold right click and drag down) also doesn't work.
Bring back Opera 12!
Just middle click with the mouse on the link, or press ctrl left click. That gives you a background new tab. If you press shift middle click , or shift ctrl left click you get a foreground new tab.
