@action49, do you still have this issue? If so, could you describe which Mac you have (info from "About this Mac"), same question for @nellafragale?

File>New tab gets you a new tab, but can you, on a mac, get closing the last active tab to return you to an open tab with your speed dials showing, as happens in windows and linux? I don't see why I should need to do that extra File> New tab step...
