Based on recent posts this looks like another sync server issue more than a client-side installation issue, so will keep retrying re-sync and hope for the best.

Same issue here for about a week or so as others have mentioned. Currently using Opera on my Windows 8.1 Guest account (no bookmarks/extensions/etc. installed)

Synchronization and sign in work fine on Opera for Android and sees its own sync data on sync.opera.com but it sees no synced tabs for the Windows installation.

sync.opera.com keeps asking me to log in even though I'm logged into auth.opera.com.

While composing this reply on my Win8 Guest account sync.opera.com finally showed my Android sync data, so will try resetting the sync.opera.com data, sign out of Opera Account and try again.

I'm seeking advice for a long-delayed update of Opera.

I intend to wipe everything, including my profile except for the bare essentials because of some issues when downgrading after a pretty disastrous upgrade, where I received a warning about the profile being for the version of Opera that I was downgrading from.

I've up- and downgraded and parallel-installed multiple versions of Opera quite a few times over the years, never changing my profile folder and never getting a warning about the version of my profile, which I thought was intentionally designed to be invariant across Opera versions.

Backing up my history and bookmarks seems pretty straightfoward, but backing up my extensions (especially to preserve the data in my V7 Notes extension) looks a little more complicated. Looking at

Extension Cookies: Cookies associated with your installed extensions, such as location data for a weather extension

Extension Rules: A storage area for your extensions’ rules that need to be persisted

Extension State: A storage area for your extension’s states that need to be persisted

Local Extension Settings: A storage area where your installed extensions can store local data

Please let me know if this is all I need to preserve my extensions' data.

Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

Not doing Opera 53 for sure, far too many complaints in the forum.

Finding Opera upgrading to be a lot like Windows upgrading: never upgrade until there's been at least one major patch released, and probably best to use the "last known good" of a major version number, in this case 51.0.2830.55.

Sticking with Windows 8 for that reason, so many complaints about Windows 10--especially some major goof-ups with Windows Updates--but my Windows 8 installation is fairly stable.

After a pretty awful experience attempting to modernize my Opera installation to Opera 50 that forced me to roll back to Opera 42 I've had peaceful, problem-free usage of my Opera browser.

But now I'm getting more of those "Your browser is out of date" messages, so I'm ready to try again.

Not giving Opera 50 a retry after that nightmare, but so many complaints about newer versions, especially the memory issues that I fear the most.

After more than two hours reading through the complaints it looks like going to the last stable release of Opera 51 might be my best bet, except for some video playback complaints that seemed to have been resolved by disabling Opera's hardware acceleration.

Just posting this to get any last-minute updates before taking the plunge.

Just an observation: my Chrome has always been up to date, but I can't remember any notable issues aside from a little memory hoggishness that really hasn't been too bad, except running in tandem with Opera, which is still my desktop browser of choice because of it's integrated functions (done by extensions now, but the extensions--like sidebar note-taking--are there because the original Opera was so integrated)

And pre-Chromium Opera was the only browser that had a clue about respecting system resources, so I stayed loyal.

Why so many complaints with the new (maybe not improved?) Opera?

I used Auslogics Registry Cleaner to check for "(x86)\Opera" entries and there were 85 of them.

Now I'm not absolutely certain if I might have goofed in the heat of utter system meltdown panic, but I did also run CCleaner after clearing all old versions of Opera--especially from Program Files (x86)--after the Opera 50 malfunction started and it didn't detect any bad paths in the registry, so likely the 85 entries were actually installed by Opera 50.

Installed 64-bit Opera 42 and it gave me an error that it couldn't use my profile because it is now from a newer version of Opera, but it installed my bookmarks, persistent cookies (with logins intact), and extensions (with data intact) so I don't have to crack out the backup profile, and Opera is once again my default browser, so I can actually get to sleep before 3:00 AM

And to top it all Amazon Prime is streaming again, so no particular rush to play with an upgrading in the near future.

I recently tried upgrading to Opera 50 (64-bit 50.0.2762.67 (PGO), Windows 8.1 64-bit)

Surprised to see the PGO. Looked it up and this is Profile Guided Optimization, which may explain my issue.

Long story short, Opera 50 was doing fine but Windows isn't recognizing it as a browser for the purpose of default file associations.

Control Panel/Programs sees the install just fine, but if I click on a .html file, instead of giving the current version of Opera as a choice to open those kinds of files I get a bizarre "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\Opera.exe" "%1"

, and if I go to Control Panel/Default Programs and try to associate by application Opera does not appear as an option even though everything else is working properly.

I totally cleaned old Opera directory registry entries and cleaned all instances of other Opera installations from my system (at one point the default option popup dialog was pointing to my old "Opera39" install directory).

But the problem persists, so this newly discovered PGO feature may be reading old configuration info from my profile directory--which hasn't changed across many different versions--and trying to set itself to non-existent Opera installations.

If that is the case, the only option right now is to try rolling back to the Opera 42 32-bit (if 64-bit Opera 42 doesn't go) that was allowing itself to be set as the default browser. I only tried Opera 50 because 42 stopped playing Amazon Prime streams, a very mild irritation compared to this mess.

Noticed that the ftp rollback option has specific 32 and 64-bit setup files, so this solves everything.

I'm assuming best thing is to uninstall and delete the Opera installation folder before upgrading/rolling back.

I have been looking at resolutions to complaints about Opera using more RAM. My version 36 installation was running just fine and for a variety of reasons I wound up getting updated to version 42.

Loving the ad blocker and search/copy pop up, but it does use more RAM, sometimes alarming amounts.

It looks like this memory issue has been resolved with v. 50 since flic says everything is OK, but I'm not understanding having to go into the registry and delete "(x86)" entries.

A big issue for me is being able to roll back my Opera version and there seems to be a problem with the previous versions page where you can get a standalone download (i.e. a version specific downloadable file) for older (previous to about Opera 40) versions but for newer versions there is a two-step process where you click a radio button under "Select installer" for a certain MB size installation and the link for the download button appears to point to the version of Opera you want, but when you click on it you are sent to the default Opera download page and if you click "Download" there you download a very small setup exe, so a network installation without any evidence of what version will actually be installed if you launch it.

I also have questions about the problems with 32-bit versus 64-bit installations. I have 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1 now) but my Opera 42 also shows up as 32-bit in Task Manager and installed in the "Program Files (x86)" folder. Running the 64-bit version may actually help the RAM issue for this older version.

How do you obtain the correct version and then "force" the Opera installer to use the correct CPU/OS architecture?

There was also the suggestion that using a 32-bit Opera installation to download Opera will result in a 32-bit version being downloaded. Please explain how to get around this, since both my browsers (Chrome, Opera) are installed in the (x86) folder.

Having this exact problem and I am also using an older version of Opera (42.0.2393.137). The thread stopped at the version question.

There was an ongoing thread about memory issues in 50, so not updating until that is resolved since the version I'm using now is hogging more RAM than the version 36 I was using before and I don't want it to get worse.

Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu all work fine. Amazon is the only problem child here.

Was using Chrome almost exclusively for all my streaming anyway, so really just want to confirm this is an Opera version bug.
