can't customize toolbar, other stuff

Hi. I started using Opera 19 recently on a Mac OS Mavericks machine. It seems to work ok, except that I can't customize the look and feel of the browser at all. I understand that I am supposed to be able to right-click on the toolbar to get a context menu that lets me customize it. However, right-clicking does nothing, unless I do it on the tab bar, bookmark bar, or an extension icon, and none of those context menus contains a customization option. Nor can I find anything in the preferences to let me customize things.
Is customization not an option on Mac OS, perhaps, or is something wrong? My inclination is that something is wrong, because none of the buttons or bookmarks in the toolbar area highlight on mouseover. They all function, but they are visually static, which makes me think something is broken.
Thanks for any help.

You cannot customize the main toolbar at this time beyond installing extensions.

Absolutely ridiculous. Opera is becoming worthless.
