      Dear Opera developers,

How to annoy your loyal users:

Step 1. For each and every download, make a download progress floaty thing appear near the top right corner. Let's call this thing the "download floaty". Work (including downloads via MS Teams) should be annoying.

Step 2. Make sure that webpage navigation with the keyboard is not possible while the download floaty is visible. Work should be annoying, and webpage navigation should also be annoying.

Step 3. Require the user to click somewhere to make the download floaty go away. It should not go away automatically, it should remain visible (and prevent PgDown from working) until the user clicks somewhere. But the user must be careful to not click on another link on the webpage. The user should have to find a blank area of the page to click on. This increases the annoyance.

Step 4. Most important: do not provide a setting to turn off the download floaty as this would reduce the annoyance level. We cannot have that. Work should be annoying, and downloading files should also be annoying.

"But user," you may say, "the download floaty presents valuable information!"

      To which I would reply:
This is a matter of opinion. Take the filename, for example. As the user, downloading yet another Excel spreadsheet, or Word doc, or PDF, or whatever, I know what I am downloading. Therefore, showing me the filename does not give me any useful information.

As a side note, the filename is often truncated with "..." on the end, thus making the version number, or date, or whatever useful data was part of the filename, hidden. This is good; it adds to the annoyance.

Other information: the progress bar. Before Opera, I used Firefox for many years (even Netscape before that). The downloads button in Firefox has a circular progress indicator which gives me all the info I need. Do not do this because it would reduce the annoyance level.

Other information: the speed of transfer, estimated time to completion, etc. This is potentially useful, but I would argue, only for large files. In Firefox, I can open a separate, small window which just lists the downloads, their sizes, rate of transfer, progress bar, etc. I put this separate window on my 2nd monitor and I find it very useful to not have it part of my browsing experience, not covering anything up, not preventing keyboard navigation, and so on.
This is bad as it reduces annoyance and that's not what Opera is about.

      That is all, carry on.
