Clicking mail link ignores the default mail client.

If I click a mail link then the current tab card will be replaced by Gmail. In the system settings, I have set Thunderbird as the default mail client.

Check at the URL
opera://settings/handlers. You might have mail.google.com set as the default for mailto links in Opera. If so, you should be able to remove that handler.
