Hey! I`m having a lot of troubles recently while im trying to create gx profiles to organize myself and the contents i consume. So, whenever i create a new profile, it does not create any kind of desktop shortcuts, and every time i try to search for it in the windows search bar, i cant find it anywhere. The only option i have is to pin the profile to the task bar, but the problem is: (1) i dont want to overload my taskbar, i prefer to have the least things possible in it; and (2) i cant move the shortcut that is created in the taskbar to anywhere else, it just stays stuck there.

When i created my first profiles a while ago, almost a year i guess, it automatically created the desktop shortcut for me, and it would also appear in windows search bar, but now it simply does not appear.

I already tried to click in "restore icons" option, but it only appears (again) for me to pin it to the taskbar, the desktop shortcut still isnt created

@cabuscoo "Restore icons" should create a desktop shortcut. I'm surprised that it doesn't. It does here for me with Opera GX 111.0.5168.90 64-bit on Windows 11 23H2. Note though that if the taskbar button for the profile isn't pinned, you'll need notifications on in settings in Windows so that when you click "Restore icons", you get a notification where you can click "allow". Otherwise, it won't work.

You can manually create a shortcut though if you want:

Right-click on your desktop, goto "New" and choose "Shortcut".

Then, browse to opera.exe in Opera's install folder. The install path is listed at the URL opera://about.

Then, name the shortcut "Opera GX - Name you want" and click finish.

Then with the taskbar button pinned for that profile button (temporarily, you can unpin it later), right-click it, right-click "Opera GX - Name", goto "properties" and switch to the "Shortcut" tab, select everything in the target field, right-click the selection and choose "copy". You an then cancel out of the dialog and unpin the taskbar button.

Then, you can right-click on the desktop shortcut you made, goto "properties", switch to the "Shortcut" tab, delete everything in the target field, right-click and paste. You can then apply and OK out.

For the icon, you can click "change icon" on the Shortcut tab and browse to that profile's folder and choose its "on the side.ico" file. The path to its profile folder is shown at the URL opera://about when running that profile.

Or, while the taskbar is pinned, browse to "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar" in Windows Explorer (File Explorer), right-click the shortcut for the profile, choose "copy" and then right-click on your desktop and choose "paste". Then you can unpin the taskbar button and the shortcut should still work.

Now, if you're on Windows 11 24H2, I hear you might have problems with Opera creating the profile taskbar button and desktop shortcut.

Now, if you want the shortcut for the profile in your start menu, you need to copy it to "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" too. Then, you can click the Start button, goto "All apps", scroll down to the shortcut, right-click it and choose "Pin to Start".

@cabuscoo In Windows Explorer (File Explorer), click "View", goto "Show" and enable file extensions and hidden items.
