VPN does not work on WDS wifi mesh network

I have just setup a new wireless network in an office, and it includes a WDS-based configuration to extend the range. I have noticed that while the Opera VPN works when connected to the core wifi AP, it will not work (icon stays red) if connected to one of the WDS-based APs.

I know that the WDS protocols use something called 3-address or 4-address frames for routing between mesh devices and clients, so I guess that this is possibly why a VPN protocol layered on top might not work, but is it a fixable problem?
