Opera reinstall does not work. Damaged .pak helper files

I had multiple installations of opera on my device, no idea how they got there. In an attempt to delete all installations and afterwards download one new version it all went wrong. I installed some third party software to delete all excess opera files because I couldn't remove it in the usual way, nor could I install a new version. I now managed to delete all installations but I can't install a new version. Even opera gx doesn't install. I keep getting the warning "at least one helper file .pak is damaged. Install opera again" but it keeps on failing.
Anyone any ideas on how to fix this?
