My personalized interface and sidebar setup have disappeared

I have used Opera for a long time. I have liked organizing my browser activity with different Workspaces and so on. Suddenly they aren't there, after my computer independently did a shutdown and restart. I guess I never created a backup, and found the sync feature confusing and wasn't sure what it was for. Anyway, what happened? My history has disappeared except for thte last few days after that shutdown happened. I'm thinking there was an update to a new version of Opera, but that doesn't explain everything. I am very frustrated and losing immense amounts of time trying to get back to where I was working. I have lost all my saved passwords and so on. I am tempted to just go back to Google so I can get on with my life.
Nothing in the help pages that I could find relates to this. Every search I made related to this came back empty. I didn't even know what key words to use to describe the situation. It was devastating and detrimental to my work load.
