Add the following command lines to the shortcut that you use to start Opera: --enable-smooth-scrolling

If you don't know how to add them, click here.

        Thanks for the link.

I was looking for a different problem regarding scrolling which I hoped to solve using these commands.

The slowest scroll speed is a bit to fast for my preference. In Presto it was possible to scroll really slow. I'm speaking of pressing the middle-mouse-key and controlling the scroll speed by moving the mouse up and down.

Does anybody know if this can be achieved by these commands or other means?

Install this extension and then this one. You can configure the scrolling as you like...

I would definitely recommend trying out @christoph142's modern scroll. Works just like Opera Prestos normal scroll, and has loads of setting to tweak it how you like. Oh, and it's a native Opera extension (from Opera add-ons) too.

Agree with Linuxmint7. Christoph142's modern scroll is really a very elegant extension and worth adding.

Thanks so much for recommending "modern scroll".
                  Works great.
But so far I haven't found a setting to minimize the huge arrow and black spot during scrolling.

Huge arrow and black spot? Are you certain that is not a setting in your mouse (if you're using a mouse)? I don't see this.

                        Yes I'm certain.
Checking "for mouse wheel clicks" and immediately a rather big arrow appears after a mid-click pointing to the direction of the mouse movement. Increasing the movement (= increasing speed) additionally a black spot appears in a distance to the arrow proportional to the speed.

Here's a screenshot but the black spot (about the same diameter as the arrow) seems not to be "screenshotable"
