So I just got a new laptop with 8.1 and the first thing I do is install a new browser.
But it appears Opera does not play nice with 8.1 (I'm on 8.1 64bit, Opera 26.0 Stable)
as the system close button (Red X in the top right of your window) does not work.
Last boot, it was all three buttons that were unresponsive (Minimize, Maximize/Restore and Close) despite being enabled.
Then it worked all fine. Then I restarted Opera and now I can't close at all.

The computer is a Yoga 2, so I also wonder if the touchscreen has an influence?

Anyway, it's not like I actually close the browser that often, but it's just so damn amateurish!

Also, do the keyboard shortcuts work? Ctrl+Shift+x and Alt+F4?

Not sure, as it is 8.1 - have you tried to grab Operas Titlebar and drag it down the screen until it flaps out?
I avoid Win8+ whenever possible - but from what I experienced Apps are not really meant to be closed (at least once they are somewhat integrated into the "modern" UI)
