Opera almost unusable with VPN downloads

I regularly transfer files via VPN and since recently (cannot remember exactly since when) downloading files of few gigs of size almost blocks my browser entirely. it becomes very sluggish, almost unresponsable, and it takes ages until a click on a tab, icon whatever shows a reaction.

I checked opera task manager, whenever this download is running, CPU load starts to hover between 40 and 60% (laptop with power cord).
