"only-search" malware

  • Am using Opera 25,only two days ago whenever I started the browser I get this site:
    http://www.only-search.com/?babsrc=HP_ss_nch_opera&mntrId=ECA600164471A6EA&affID=129300&tsp=5417
    instead of the start page!!
I failed several times to remove it or to block it, besides, I can't manage the start page or the search engines !!!

  • This isn't really an Opera problem so much as it is a Windows problem. You've got something installed on your system that is taking over your web pages and it can't just be fixed within Opera. You're going to need to install something like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and let it have a go at your system.

  • As @lando242 has noted, Only-search is not inherently an Opera problem, it is an OS-plus-browser infection. Only-search is a redirect form of browser hijacker that usually gets into your system by piggybacking on (bundled with) other free downloaded software, embedding itself into your OS and browsers. While by itself it is annoying, the ads on the parent website to which it redirects you can (and sometimes do) act as a portal for serious malware to enter your system... so you need to get it off your system.

Because it can embed itself so deeply (in browsers, shortcuts, registry, startup folders, etc, etc), it is often not a simple matter to remove it. Often, multiple antimalware tools (such as AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, or even stronger) are needed to clean it out, and that implies a certain level of know-how for the user. The safest way for most users to clean it up is to get help from the expert volunteers at specialty websites that deal with this sort of thing routinely and can lead a user through the process, step by step. Reputable sites include DSLR Security Cleanup, Wilders, BleepingComputer, and others. The only thing to remember if you elect to get help at such sites is first, post with a clear title (eg: Only-search.com when I open Opera 25) and follow the directions they supply exactly as they request... and if you don't understand them, ask first and don't guess or assume.
