How to stop all Opera data traffic except the current active tab?

I find that Opera keeps uploading and downloading shit to the tune of 500 MB in an hour, even though I'm idle!
Every other tab in multiple windows apparently keeps sending and receiving data against my will.

How can I stop this constant waste of my data allotment?

Without having to use Opera as a single tab environment - which would defeat the whole point.
