Just started to experience similar issues here - Opera 73.0.3856.284
        Operating System: Linux Mint 20
        Kernel: Linux 5.4.0-58-generic
        Architecture: x86-64

I've pretty much exhausted everything I could find on the web. Nothing has cured it.

@Frizzledoldbutt The directions at https://www.reddit.com/r/operabrowser/wiki/opera/linux_libffmpeg_config were gathered/tested on Linux Mint FWIW.

Whenever a new opera version is availabe I do a fast check on a dutch website npo.nl, to see whether live streaming and watching old programs work. On Ubuntu 18.04 all works fine in combination with chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra.
            Ubuntu 18.04 :
            chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_87.0.4280.66-0ubuntu0.18.04.1_amd64.deb
            opera-stable_73.0.3856.344_amd64.deb
            Ubuntu 20.04 :
            chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_1%3a85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.20.04.2_amd64.deb
            opera-stable_73.0.3856.344_amd64.deb (same version)
On Ubuntu 20.04 the DRM protected video content refuses to stream and or play.

Any tips how to get the newest opera to work properly on the most recent LTS edition of Ubuntu ?

@truden said in The Videos Don't Play Topic:

@PixCatholica, I did some research and replaced libffmpeg.so with the one I downloaded from https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-updates/amd64/chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra/download
Download the package, find libffmpeg.so in it and extract it.
Open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu (this path may vary) click with right mouse button on "opera" folder and "Open as Root". Replace the libffmpeg.so with the new file.
              Now you can play videos.

Thanks, this works for me, Opera 75 on Debian 10.

Lol, I even reported a bug to Opera team before this.

Yesterday I switched my os from Windows 10 to Kali Linux. I installed opera for Linux but now I can't see videos from social media while Youtube videos are working properly. In other browsers I can see those videos but I can't see this here. Why?

I'm having the same problem. Utube works fine, but nothing else works.

@tstowshin Maybe Facebook is just blocking Opera? Can you watch videos in other pages?

                              I'm using linux mint 19 & 20.
Mint 19 Opera is working fine and mint 20 which I just installed, Opera has the problem.
A look at .config/opera for mint 19 shows that pepper and widevines are installed, while mint 20 has no pepper dir and widevines looks like a rudimentary basic form.

Can I just copy my whole .config/opera file from 19 to 20?

@tstowshin The post is wordy for detail reasons. But, the gist of it is to create a folder named "lib_extra", download the right libffmpeg.so file and put it in the lib_extra folder.

In opera://about, what version of Chromium does it say your Opera is using and what does it say for the "install" path? We can link you do the right file.

                                          mange takk,

I followed a similar set of instructions, but it did not work.
I used 52.2 which is for chrom 89, but my chromium is 90 and dist 54 is for chromium 91. It has no linux dist. So I was looking into how to compile the source code.
Luckily there was an Opera update, this morning that fixed my problem and I now can play videos again.

Had this issue yesterday and fixed it by copying the libffmpeg.so from chromium, but the devs managed to make it worse today somehow and now this solution doesn't fix it. I went from Twitch and Twitter videos not working to everything playing again, back to Twitch and Twitter not playing but also Youtube livestreams not playing
