Opera 68 - Tab Strip Implementation REALLY slow

So I've been an Opera Mac user for quite sometime now, and one of the biggest reason I used it was the speed for opening and closing tabs. However when i upgraded to Opera 68 I noticed the tabs become (visually different) and sluggish and stuttery to open and close - it was like a drop from 60Fps to 10Fps.
I then looked at the changelog and saw that "Tab Strip VIews" was enabled. So I went down to shut it off but that gives a big grey bar (photo attached)

All I wanna know is why the tabs were changed ? I dont see any practical value and from what I can see the change will be permanent by Opera 69 Release.

I also just got a new Windows Machine (after long) and noticed that it has the same design as the "Tab Strip Views" and even no way to turn it on and it was also very slow compared to version 67 on Mac.

Is there any way to get the old style back in Mac? Or Windows? Is there any way to make the new style as fast as before? Till now opera was the fastest browser for me but now its the slowest and even though I love the features offered I'm afraid Ill have to switch browsers if this goes on.
