Opera beta 68 - news

@l33t4opera and to Opera devs.
OS Win7 32-bit.
After updating beta to 68....3 from beta 67....28 - it will not start whatever I do.
Worse than that, I had a tonne of bookmarks on beta speeddial which I cannot find following that update (which did in fact download, but failed to restart).I am loathed to remove both beta versions as mentioned until I can find those [important] bookmarks?
Or are they lost due to a corrupted .3 update?
What would happen if I ran the installer on beta 67...28 or 68.....3 ?
I assume the speeddial would still be intact even though I can't open either in order to update to beta 68....5?Please note: I have beta on a capable USB with masses of space.
Also: I have not changed my beta profile. This long standing user looks forward to any helpful suggestion please. Thank you.

HI @operafanuk, it should be fixed in the latest version (68.0.3618.5), so you can update to it using the offline installer, then launch the Opera, and check if the issue is gone for good.
As you can also read above, the issue with the Opera's sync service should be fixed as well, so you can try to sync your data (including this your bookmarks), and see if that helps. -

Funny as you say but I can't sync. I'm a long term user who still has a sync account with userid — but I can't enter a userid any more. I tried the email from my account but that didn't work either. Currently running Version:68.0.3618.5

Hi @krischik, you can reset the synced data on https://sync.opera.com (the data in your Opera's profile should be intact), and then try to sign in again.

Delete the data? Not my most favourite course of action. Sounds like a sure way to get syntonisations conflicts as soon as I log in on the 2nd device.
I have been deleting duplicates all over the place in the last two month or so. The prospect of even more duplicates doesn't make me happy.
Also: I didn't forget my passphrase so is that really the correct course of action?

@krischik As far as I am aware of, resetting the data on the website doesn't affect the stored data on your devices, but you can check it on a fresh profile by running the Opera with the switch "--user-data-dir="/path/to-fresh-profile", and see if this even fixes the signing in issue.
Besides that, you can simply backup your Bookmarks, BookmarksExtras and Favicons from your current profile, before you sync your data, if you successfully sign in that case. After that, sign out from the account, close the Opera, overwrite the files with the backups, and relaunch the Opera.
By the way: the items from another device's Speed Dial are anyway placed under separate/dedicated folder under "Other Speed Dials", so that will not be duplicated for sure. -

I have both stable and beta opera. And now that the stable Opera has recovered I can confirm that sync with stable is up and running. I tried the
--user-data-dir=
option as well and could not log in.(Having created another 2 dozen duplicates outside the speed dial.
I moved some bookmarks into folder and now I have then twice: Inside the folder and in the original location. Another case of delete and move not synchronising correctly. Is adding a universal id to every entry to reliably detect move and delete that difficult?)
I'm still reluctant to reset because I fear I might loose sync entirely not being able to use my current opera account to create new sync data.

@l33t4opera - Hi my friend. Sorry for delay in responding.
I am happy to inform this post is via beta 68...5.
I followed your instructions, and when downloading Opera opened a brand new version (eg: no bookmarks or my beta user default settings). However, I backed up my 67....28 profile and copied it into the new beta version (68....5) then removed the new beta profile and restarted.
Beta 68....5 then opened as normal together with all my bookmarks and settings.
Only when satisfied that all was well after 24hrs, did I remove previous beta versions - 67....28 and the problem 68....3.I confirm all is running well and thank you for your kind assistance with my problem.
A thousand thumbs up my friend from this very long standing and loyal user -

Hi @krischik, when you try to reset your data on the sync website, it could help with signing in issue, since some users have mentioned this helps for them.
As I wrote above, resetting the data should not affect (touch) your settings and data, stored on your devices.
So you can try to backup the above mentioned files, reset the data, then check if sync/signing in works again. If so, then sign out from the account, close the browser, and overwrite the files with the backups - that way, you will restor your proper items, even if they were duplicated with the sync. -

Is it possible to get back the recent history and opened tabs in other instances of Opera as it was before? Right now I have a search in open tabs (useless as for me) instead of recent history (closed + links on other devices).

Hi @diveslip, yes, for now you can disable the
opera:flags#search-in-open-tabs
, and press "Relaunch" to bring back the Tab menu. -

@l33t4opera Might be there is also a magic flag to make Opera play drm video and audio... It's broken on my Kubuntu 19.10 but works well on Kubuntu 18.04 at work. But I already mentioned it in the dedicated topic but no recommendation worked for my unfortunately.

@diveslip Not a "magic flag", but you can try to install the Opera from the DEB package (instead of the snap version), then download and install (or unpack) proper "libffmpeg.so" lib, and then download and unpack the appropriate Widevine version (you can use one from the Chrome package) by following the instructions for example from here.

@l33t4opera I did it already but still have issues. But thanks anyway. I hope one day Opera devs follow Vivaldi approach and do all magic behind the hood so I don't need to bother.

@diveslip If you use proper versions of the libs (as it's mentioned in the link): the "FFMPEG" and Widevine on the paths recognized by Opera, and of course the Opera from the DEB, then it should work. It works here in all Opera's streams for me.
