Automatic update is an idiotic idea. I can disable such feature in just about every app — but NOT in Opera. This new version (66.0.3515.44) had the terrible idea of enforcing the automatic updating of the browser.

The problem is Opera creates an Automatic Update folder in my Downloads folder every time I start the browser. I update my computer daily to external devices. That crappy Automatic Update folder of Opera gets always backed up to the external devices. I DO NOT WANT THAT!

So, you should remove this automatic updating feature from Opera. It was like that in the previous version.

      Opera version: 66.0.3515.44
      OS: 64-bit Windows 10, version 1909

@parpaluck In the FAQ there are some instructions about how to avoid auto-update.

Ain't working! That shit still shows up in my Downloads folder. I renamed that crappy file, although it is in /Users/AppData, not in the Programs folder of Windows.

@parpaluck There seems to be something wrong with your Opera installation. Try uninstall and reinstall it.

I followed other suggestions and I responded in this thread:
              https://forums.opera.com/topic/30068/opera-autoupdate-folder-keeps-showing-up-in-downloads-folder/27

Uninstalling and reinstalling are dreadful and I keep out as much as I can. Thanks for your time.

@parpaluck In Windows just create system environment variable with name and value OPERA_AUTOUPDATE_DISABLED. And after restarting Opera you'll see "Update checker is disabled" on About page

Yes, instead one simple ON/OFF in basic settings, ya have to update task scheduler... simple... hey lets make Opera user experience simple and fun! (irony)

@v-m-smith the word "just" just doesn't have place in this sentence. Just is clicking a setting in the app settings, having to "just" do something you have no way of knowing how to do is not something you "just" do. Hey "just" know how the developers made it work, easy-peasy, no problem.
