how to set "open in new tab" when I click a link. Maybe I'm blind, but can't seem to find it

@garyflater There isn't such setting. To open a link in a new tab you can right click on it and choose open in new tab or you can press Ctrl while clicking on the link.

Whatever leocg said, plus middle clicking on a url will open it on a new tab.
That is the reason I have broken the wheel button on my last 2 mice
