@osblins We have not made any changes in this area, it may be Youtube app where this feature is added now to premium user. you may try using Desktop mode for listening music with screen off.

I wonder if the options "Restrict Background Data" or "Restrict Background Activity" could play a role here.
Is one or both of these options enabled for this app?

I have the same experience , since around 4 weeks now , playing YouTube in desktop mode is not possible without screen on. very inconvenient for the safety of my phone and data's on it. what i also recognized , there is no play button, the triangle, anymore .only the stop button the square.
I would really appreciate a solution for it. -

It's still no working, using opera browser on android doesn't play youtube videos in the backgroud.
Brave browser does it, so it's not youtube that's stopping it. -

It works! I've just figured it out and it is playing currently on my phone.
Open youtube in Desktop version, start video, minimize Opera or open a new tab. If audio stops, swipe from top of screen, to get where you can turn on/off wifi, and press play arrow. Thats it. -

@egpank Thanks for the tip ! But the problem is that youtube desktop is a pain to switch to and then use !
