The videos worked fine with "Install Chrome Extensions + h264ify" extensions for 1080p60fps. Now everything is scary lag with videos, even at 480p it suffers lag and intermittent pauses, even without those extensions. I have to use another browser to watch videos. Opera is becoming unbearable for this reason. I was not going to incorporate native h264 in version 65?

The video playback is not the issue. You should have read all thread, but here it go:
@no9or9 said in High cpu usage watching youtube:
@ab-garcez It seems like the issue is caused by animated tab icon. When you hover mouse over tab and animation stops, CPU usage goes down significantly. I found this suggestion on the other forum and it happens to be right.

Since it's not plainly stated, it's not the video render that's the problem. It's the -audio- render, and it looks like that's what's causing the 'constantly loading' issue.
Muting audio on in tab animations/video dramatically lowers usage rates, and on sites where I can -find- the audio source, stops the constantly loading issue on that page. -

@Tagloff nopes, as said above, the bug resides in tab audio animation. If you simply hover the animated tab icon (therefore making it static), the cpu load plummets.

@ab-garcez It also happens on other sites, other than youtube/video only sites. And it actually takes clicking on it to mute the audio before the usage significantly drops, like Tumblr. Where if you hover, usage cuts in half, but if you mute, it drops to 'idling' usage.

@ab-garcez OK. It seems to work just leaving the mouse pointer on top of the sound icon. And immediately pressing [F] key can see full screen apparently without problems. Although I have not tried it outside of youtube.
Is there no way to directly disable that animation of the icon in the browser? It catches my attention that such a silly bug has not been fixed with an update. -

@Tagloff I opened this (really have) Tumbler page and the same happens: the CPU drops from 40% to 3~4% when I hover the mouse. BTW, my CPU is a Intel 2450M.

I dreamed that the patch improving high CPU usage has already been released, but I woke up and it's still gone.

Okay, so, I caught my anti-virus/internet security software (Comodo) randomly hogging 60% of my cpu. It didn't do it all the time, but it insidiously wouldn't actually shutdown, so I uninstalled it and switched to Kaspersky.
Now while youtube/audio sources are running, my CPU utilization stays around 15-30%.
So everyone might have to check your anti-virus/internet security software interaction's with Opera. But the memory usage of Opera has increased so i think I turned off/on a couple flags I shouldn't have and have to play around with that.

Since last update (65.0.3467.48) the CPU usage is not that high in YouTube, but it is still pretty high on sites like Spotify if it's not the active tab. Even if it's the active tab, Opera uses consistently 5% of CPU power only to do audio animation - power usage goes from Moderate to Low when I hover the mouse.
I think it's time to deactivate tab audio animations for good. There are some weird random cpu usage spikes as well when there's audio - going from 15% to 60~70% then going down again, which never happens in Chrome. Chrome cpu usage is still way lower on same websites.

i just wanna update my original post..
@nvmjustagirl said in High cpu usage watching youtube:
@arkus1995 lol yea i meant that when stable is muted then ya see what the video cpu is pull 'n..
then when ya un-mute ya see the cpu soar way too high.. so to me the cpu run 'n that high means maybe the audio part needs fix 'n
And the video cpu looked ok..
dev theirs not much difference.. b'tween video & audio cpu on my end
dev for me used lots less cpu for me use 'n as a Standalone..
i also used Opera_GX_63.0.3368.56786 Portable lately.. to me it used less cpu than all the rest..
the latest Gx compares with the dev tho..
Because nothing new has come out from opera except this one Opera GX 64.0.3417.139..
Opera Stable 64.0.3417.83 The cpu audio would drop by hovering mouse over the speaker icon in that tab thats playing the video and audio
and even more by muting the tab..
now the Opera GX 64.0.3417.139 does not reduce cpu with the mouse hovering over the speaker icon
stays the same.. so perhaps the animation has been fixed?.. but still cpu is still way to high for Youtube movies and such..Cpu now only drops when muting tab
when un-muting.. cpu soars way too high to watch a movie for a 1 hour 30 minutes..
so to me the audio still needs Fixing !
