I don't like the cursors Opera 12.16 in Ubuntu use. Is it possible to change them? If "Yes" then how?

If by 'cursors' you mean mouse cursor/pointer theme ?. I use Linux Mint 17 using the MATE desktop manager and I change my mouse pointers theme using the graphic theme editor built-in, found by right-clicking the desktop and selecting 'Change Desktop Background' and then clicking on the 'Theme' tab, then on 'Customise...', and finally click on the 'Pointer' tab.
What version of Ubuntu and what desktop manager are you using ?.

I can change the mouse pointer theme, which is what I really mean in Ubuntu Trusty. But it doesn't carry over into Opera. So I am wondering if there are other settings for this in Opera.

But mine does, which is exactly the same whether the pointer is viewed in Opera's window or hovering over the desktop, that is why I mentioned how I went about changing it.
What desktop manager are you using in Ubuntu Trusty (MATE, XFCE, Jwm, something else) ?.

I added software partners in software & Updates and now I have the system pointers! So much to learn with Linux, I'm using it to keep my old brain active!

The default cursors are just the ones provided by the system ...
My current mouse pointer a non-system default (Windows) Aero style pointer.

There is a very limited number of pointers I can select for my system is there a file of greater variety of pointers I can install in Ubuntu?

There's not really a file as such, as I have just checked the Ubuntu software repository and there are no collections of pointer themes, only individual themes.
Here is one of many sites that host loads of (desktop/window/pointer/background/etc) themes for Linux.
This link (below) is specifically for mouse cursors/pointers.
