Opera User for Over 10 Years

  • I understand that modifications are required in order to keep up with the rapid change of technology and ever changing user tastes... However if I had wanted to use Chrome I would have installed it.

It appears that the once proud and independent Opera browser has buckled under the pressure and is conforming to the simple look and feel of the Chrome browser. Sad really.

I will attempt to adjust to the changes. However I fear that it may be good bye. The problem is that I don't see a viable alternate. I have been steering folks to this browser for almost as long as i have been using it. I have eleven installs on several computers.

I feel as I did when Mosaic went unsupported.

  • It has some Chrome-like features, but differences too. It's certainly faster than the Opera Presto, and can also access sites, that in certain instances the old browser was no longer capable of doing. It's not the pressure of conforming that drives this, I believe, but rather of making a better browser. Maybe it's not all there yet, but there's a lot to like about the new Opera -- the super Speed Dial with folders, unlike anything in Chrome, and Stash (for the instant bookmark, maybe to be digested later), Discover (the multi-subject, multi-language vehicle, not unlike an RSS feed), Off-Road mode also, unique (helping those with slow wifif, dial-up modem, less than the fastest of computers). Yes, there's now the ability to use almost all Chrome extensions, (which I view as a plus (we lose some of the customization of the Opera Presto, but gain some too, via the Chrime extensions) , and also, there are extensions via the Opera store too (supervised by Opera to make sure they are safe). There are ways Opera has distinguished itself already from Chrome, and may do more in the future. I don't see the glass as half empty, but half full. Even more than that. When I compare the current opera, to the current Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I still see no choice. For me, Opera still has more to offer.
