I'm thinking about upgrading my installation of 12.16 build 1860 to the latest v18 and I wanna know if all my settings, speeddials, bookmarks and all that comes along to the new install? I can imagine most of you have done this procedure before so please answer me if I gotta do backups etc before upgrading. Thanks

Always do backups, whether upgrading or not. Hard disks can crash, computers can get stolen, software can destroy your data due to bugs or user error.
I suggest leaving your Opera 12.16 installation alone.
Install Opera 18 in a new folder, using the USB install option.
Launch it with this command line to import your data from 12.16. The paths for your profiles can be found in Help, About Opera. To run a command line, press the Windows key + R, and type or paste the command line. (Copy my code to notepad and edit it to get the right command for your setup).
"<Full path to Opera 18>\launcher.exe" --presto-small-prefs-dir="<Full path to previous Opera version>\profile"

So how do I backup my opera settings? Wich program is best to do that? I wanna keep ALL settings from about:config etc. Will my extensions come along?

This is how I do it using 7-Zip, but you could use any archiver, or just copy the entire profile folder to an external drive. These days 32 Gbyte USB sticks are cheap. I don't have any extensions installed, but I believe they would be in the Widgets folder, or maybe an Extensions folder.

This was very helpful. I don't generally thank you but in this case I appreciate the help offered to another since I learned something.
