These days 32 Gbyte USB sticks are cheap. I don't have any extensions installed, but I believe they would be in the Widgets folder, or maybe an Extensions folder.

Always do backups, whether upgrading or not. Hard disks can crash, computers can get stolen, software can destroy your data due to bugs or user error.

I suggest leaving your Opera 12.16 installation alone.

Install Opera 18 in a new folder, using the USB install option.

Launch it with this command line to import your data from 12.16. The paths for your profiles can be found in Help, About Opera. To run a command line, press the Windows key + R, and type or paste the command line. (Copy my code to notepad and edit it to get the right command for your setup).

"<Full path to Opera 18>\launcher.exe" --presto-small-prefs-dir="<Full path to previous Opera version>\profile"
