Can't disable Facebook Friend Suggestion notifications

I am using 56.0.3051.52 on macOS 10.13.6.
I have blocked Facebook desktop notifications in my settings, but yet the friend suggestion ones still keep appearing. It's driving me a bit crazy. I turned them off in the URL bar settings and added Facebook to the blocked list, but still they persist.
I see there's no way to turn off notifications for friend suggestions on Facebook itself, but surely I can block them with my browser? Opera is the only browser I have this problem with. My other browsers don't show any notifications from FB ever. I suspect Facebook is performing some devious trickery since they should not be able to send me anything so I'd really appreciate some assistance in permanently stopping these annoying 5-10 time a day notifications.
It would be awesome if Opera had a Whitelist option for notification blocking, so when enabled no site would send notifications or even ask to do so if it was not on the allowed list.
I'm very happy with Opera apart from this and the fact that I can't get multi-row tabs. Multi-row tabs would eliminate the need for me to use other browsers completely.
