Every time I open any site with login, it asks me to log in. It has happened after the update to 56.0.3051.36. The password section in settings is empty (before the update there was a lot of items).

Is it a known bug? What is its' status?

Which macOS version are you on @lyopsik ? It's not a known bug.

@avl Sorry to contradict, but this has well been reported by several users, including myself.
I am using the latest Opera version on MAc OS 10.13.6 on 3 different Macbook (Pro & Air).

Until some months ago , login and passwords were perfectly saved by Opera; after an update somewhere in June/July, login and password for several websites where not retained or updated anymore.

What is confusing is that not all web sites are affected; the login/password is saved/updated for some other websites —> meaning that the settings in Opera Preferences are OK.

After searching this forum, several corrective actions were tried : resetting/installing Opera, Disk Utility, rebuilding permissions, changing access to Opera Safe Storage in Keychain Access, …
The problem remains unsolved and identical on all 3 MacBook !!!

It also appears that those passwords that are still saved are not listed in 'Password Manager', even if it is showing in the password pop up window next to address bar.
The Password Manager List is just empty.
When updating login and password, Opera never ask to save the password (even with setting being 'on' in Preference).

            Thanks for your answer(s).
