There is already a sidebar, but it only opens the sidebar with new messenger feature, if you click bookmarks or downloads it opens a full entire page, not the sidebar.

This would indeed be a useful addition, though it might need some changes to some of the pages when opened specifically from the sidebar, as they might show too much information.
