Is there a way to make bookmarks open in a new tab by default in Opera 2x? I know I can right click, but that's not what I need as having the default behavior be different is resulting in lots of "Where did that tab go?" frustration.

You mean Opera 12x? Middle click a bookmark (or a speed dial) opens in a new tab.

Middle click also works in Opera Blink (2x) too, IIRC. I'm on Linux at the minute, so cannot check.

No, Opera 21 (i.e. 2x).
In Opera 12x, there already is an option in Preferences called "Reuse current tab":

In Opera 21, middle click a bookmark or link and it opens in a background tab. Press shift middle click on the bookmark or link and it opens in a foreground tab.

I could swear I saw an extension on this :((, that always opened in a new tab, but I just couldn't find it today. Maybe it was in a dream, but I think there must be one that works. Neater Bookmarks for Chrome and Chrookmarks for Chrome both have the feature/setting, left click opens in new tab, but when I tried them out, they simply didn't work for me. Not sure why.
By the way, if you don't like opening bookmarks with a middle click or a shift middle click (and the middle of my mouse is not the best for that), you can also, open a new tab with:
ctrl left click (background tab)
ctrl shift left click (foreground tab).
I know it's not what you are looking for, but I did want you to know about it.

Yes, maybe I changed the settings in Preferences to Open in New Tab if it isn't the original default. -

Thanks for pointing out that the ctrl options work for bookmarks as well as for links (where I already use them all the time). That's really extremely helpful to me, though it'd obviously be easier not to have to retrain myself.
Middle click doesn't really work for me as I always have the touchpad on my laptops set for "tap = left click" and I have just tapping on bookmarks and having them open in a new tab burned into my brain after years of doing it that way.
Sometimes it's not so much about having to learn new things as having to force yourself to unlearn things that causes frustration.

Yes, maybe I changed the settings in Preferences to Open in New Tab if it isn't the original default.Yes I know it's in 12x - the point is I want that functionality in Opera 21 so it doesn't work differently than the way I've been doing it in 12 and previous versions for years and years.

I agree. It is nice, at least, that the same keyboard shortcuts (with the control key) (or with the middle key of the mouse) works the same for bookmarks and links, so it's easier to remember. I think I like the control-left-click (or control-shift-left click) option better too. Good luck! Maybe that extension will be out there which gives you what you want (or it will come in the near future). As I say, I found a few with the purported feature, but when I tested them, they didn't work for me. Not sure why. Using the keyboard shortcut can be better, because there may be times you want to open a bookmark or link in the same tab.
By the way, did you know for searches in the Omni-Search (main address) bar, if you hold the alt key down and press enter, the search will open in a new tab too? If you didn't know that, it's a good one.
