Opera 18 Cant Connect to the Internet - HELP!

  • i got windows XP and i installed the latest Opera 18. but for some unknown reason, it doesnt connect to the internet. can someone explain this?

  • I have the same problem, it connects, all my tabs are there but all just have the scrolling grey circle and never actually open. Pressing speed dial has the same issue. I'm on Google chrome to post this and I may well be staying here.

  • I would suggest you make sure your firewall is accepting Opera and allowing it to connect to the internet. If you want to move from Chrome to another browser and you still cannot get Opera working then look at the new Maxthon, try it in portable version first. Firewalls are usually the problem or any anti-malware software like iobit-malware fighter, they can block connections to the web. Your Chrome may be accepted quickly my a firewall whilst Opera is ignored until you adjust. Have you ever thought about dumping Windows XP and going onto something like Crunchbang Linux or Archbang Linux if you have an older PC?

hi theuhm.. just to let u kno, i dont have an anti-virus program installed.my firewall is turned off also.. so firewall and anti-virus programs arent the issue.. firefox and an earlier version of opera work.. but opera 18 wont connect to the net. many ppl are complaining abt this.

as for linux, it completely sucks. xp may be old, but its far better than linux or ubuntu. i had ubuntu and it was a horrible experience.. never again.

so if u can suggest wat to do at this point i'd appreciate it.

  • I am stumped by your problem if you do not have either suggestions running. I agree that overall Windows is a more stable operating system in some ways but until you try multiple distributions of Linux then you never know how good or bad Linux is. I do not like Ubuntu and it is a resource hog especially for lower spec PCs. The KDE desktop on Linux is much nicer than Windows 7 or 8 if you have a nice spec PC but it crashed on me once using DeepLinux but that could be the distribution. I used to run Zorin OS6 on my desktop full time and it all worked very well although it is based on Ubuntu but looks like Windows 7 etc. I favour Crunchbang and Archbang Linux. When someone moves from Windows to Linux they will always find things not to their liking initially but the more you play the more you will eventually come to like Linux and see its many advantages. I've gone through hundreds of distributions and I find flaws with most whilst some adore them. I come from the days of the Commodore Amiga so I do not mind playing around to get what I want going. It is a shame that ReactOS is not more polished and finished so you could replace XP this way. I just get so annoyed having to run firewalls, antiviruses etc on Windows systems all dragging its performance down and the constant cleaning etc I have non of this with Linux and the thing flows. Then when Windows wants to update, afterwards things seem to be slower than before. Always try the live-USB versions before installing until you find what works well for you but do not give up, at some point you will have to turn to Linux if it is an old machine or bin the poor thing. Try the new Maxthon on your machine in portable form and you can have the engines of both IE/Chrome in one or the Avant Browser which is IE/Gecko/Chrome with a hell of a lot of options for customization. Hope someone gets off their backside and finds a solution to your problem soon. But with this site these days you will need much luck. The old Opera team went away a long time ago, some died or one did so it is not as great as it once was when it was a true pioneer and quality. All I can say is make sure you have Service Pack III added to your XP but I am sure you have this.

Try Opera 19 to see if this has been fixed. It works for me on Windows XP but I don't use it because it looks and feels like a rebranded version of Chrome.

i tried installing opera 19.. but unfortunately, the same issue arises. i dont understand what the hell is going on with opera.. i've never had a problem with installing any opera software before in my life.

  • when used with chrome, opera 18 caused internet very frequently disconnected (version 20 is the same). when went back to 11.60, no disconnection problem. you are pushing the speed too hard so that internet gets disconnected very often. i can't do normal work.

also could not find ways to adjust network connections. (in 11.60, we can do it)

    please fix the problem
