I'm using Bitdefender Free Antivirus, as mentioned in my OP. ๐Ÿ™‚

the vpn isn't connecting again. beginning to believe it is on opera's end and not on the endusers computer. i have the stable, beta, and developer versions in and yesterday the vpn in all 3 was working perfectly. now this morning in all 3 the vpn sits there saying connecting and never connects.

it has nothing to do with your av program. if opera is allowed online so is the vpn cause it's part of opera. now with that said i'm running bitdefender total security 2018. i have paranoid mode on under the firewall so i will be asked the first time something wants to go online, and i can tell you everything to do with opera is allowed.

just decided to test again before hitting submit for this post and now they're connected. something up on the server end.

Mine isn't connecting until I turn off protection. When I turn on it works, but then when I exit Opera and start it again, the VPN is not working. I think I will reinstall Opera again and see if that will solve my issue.

  • it is def opera cause it was misbehaving again this morning and now it's fine again.

The Opera browser VPN feature simply auto-connects the browser to the 3rd-party SurfEasy's VPN network while browsing. Consequently, anything that interferes along the overall pathway can cause problems. That includes blockage on the user system because of antivirus programs or whatever, problems with the Opera installation, problems establishing a proper handshake with a specific SurfEasy VPN server, or problems within the SurfEasy server itself. The 'intermittent' symptom sounds most like either a marginal handshaking operation in connecting to a VPN server or an access/availability issue involving the selected VPN server.

  • click on the settings on the top of your bitdefender free version then on the drop-down menu click protection.
on that window turn off protection/now connect your vpn until blue, now you can put protection back onto your anti-virus and vpn carries on running.

Does BD has any exceptions option?

That's better to allow it automatically every time.

  • Getting the same problem here and I'm not using Bit defender. It started slowing down 4 days ago and for the last day it hasn't worked at all.

  • @big65 : I'm having the same problem with the VPN not connecting, for the past week. I've been using Opera browser for a while now, and one of the main reasons for me using Opera is the VPN. Lately, I'm beginning to have second thoughts on whether I should change browsers. And the problems with the VPN not connecting started shortly after Symantec (Norton) purchased SurfEasy last month. It would be helpful if Norton or SurfEasy chimed in to give Heads Up on what is going on. Opera is not the browser it once was.

  • @kvncnn said in VPN not connecting:

... Opera is not the browser it once was.

Actually, Opera is still the browser it was. With Opera's sale of SurfEasy to Symantec in September and Opera's setting up its own VPN service for use by the browser, there appear to be some transitional VPN issues along with some structural changes in where the new VPN servers are located. The point is that the browser hasn't really changed, it's the VPN structure that is changing - or has changed.

  • @blackbird71 : In any event, I hope the issue of the VPN is resolved soon.

  • @kvncnn I'm using TunnelBear until '' issues '' are resolved...

  • I had the same problem, and solved it this way:

    1. Turn BitDefender off (gear icon, Protection, Protection Shield)
    2. Turn on VPN in Opera for each location (Optimal, Canada, US, etc.).
    3. After the VPN icon is Blue for each location, turn BitDefender on.
    4. Go to a different web site and see if the VPN works.

This is temporary, because if you shut down Opera, you will probably have the problem again.

  • I have a VPN in Opera 49.0.2725.64 blocked by KIS (Kaspersky)
Disabling the option "Scan secure connections on protection components" certainly helps but is not very secure, is there another way.

  • VPN in Opera Beta 50.0.2762.42 checked, it works together KIS (Kaspersky) can in 50 versions everything will be fine, we will wait for the release.

  • Hello all
I ran VPN briefly, then stopped it when I saw unexpected network traffic going to bank in Ukraine. Blocked bank IP in router and saw unexpected network traffic going to European Central Bank. Check out WebRTCLeak Prevent addon for Opera. VPN is reportedly not as secure as we may like. Search for it on the web.
    Stay safe

the problem isn't bitdefender. once one component of opera is allowed so are all components.

  • @joninio Save the FUD. Checking with several banks is for the currency converter.
