Win10, opera 42.0.2393.137
I had 2 Opera windows open.
in one I keep calendar, LinkedIn, and a few other tabs I always use as pinned tabs.in the other Opera window, I have a list of sites I am investigating/ researching.
I had to restart to reset a windows setting. I closed the Opera windows, then shutdown/restarted.
After restart, opening Opera I get the prior tabs opened on the 2nd, 'research sites' tabs.
I have lost the pinned tabs I use in the separate opera window.what good is pinning tabs if I lose them fully when closing and reopening!?
What options do I have here? Save these tabs once opened as a folder on the speed dial, as I had for the 'research' 2nd window, but hadn't done for pinned, since HEY, they're pinned -they should have been there?
Very disappointing operational flow.
BTW: searching these forums for 'pinned tabs' didn't load anything, and in fact BACKED UP a level to all forums, whereas I was searching the O 4 win section... not very useful. Thus this new thread.

In which order? Also, in your settings, did you enable "Continue where I left off" in the 'On startup' section? To my understanding pinned tabs cannot be closed, but that protection only applies within that same session. If you want those to retain then you'll need to tell Opera that it should save your session (using the option I mentioned above).
What you could consider is to use the speed dial to preserve your session. Right click on a tab and then use the option "Save tabs as speed dial folder", this might help to preserve the sites you want to keep open. However, a better way might be to simply add all those sites which you always want to keep open to the automatically opened sites.
Check your settings (browser section), then use the option "Open a specific page or set of pages" in the On Startup section.
Hope this can help.

Welcome to Opera Forums!
Since my experience, Opera Blink don't save windows if all of them are closed, just the latest closed active window remains when Opera restars.
In cases like yours, the History is the tool to rescue the tabs. Other way is to use extensions like Group Your Tabs or Onetab to keep a "Back Up" of tabs in any window.
"GroupYourTabs" & "OneTab" are Chrome Extensions, you must install "DownLoad Chrome Extension" from Opera Addons Page.

If you are going to go the "Download Chrome Extensions" route, look into Session Buddy. It is a very powerful session manager. It keeps a history of your closed windows, even after closing the browser. Very handy for recovering from accidents.

Just like @shelluser has said, the pinned tabs will be closed if you do not save browsing sessions, for it to be saved you need to tell opera to do that. I think his reply is the perfect answer, if that doesn't help i'll be happy to assist further.
