New version of Opera for Android with UI overhaul

  • Hi all,

If you’ve been following our beta channel, you’ve probably seen that we’ve given Opera for Android a serious lick of paint: the browser has a new look that’s fresh, modern, and inspired by Android’s material design.

We’re happy to start rolling out this new UI and feature set to the stable Opera for Android channel as well. This will happen gradually, so it may take a quite a while before you see it on your phone or tablet. If you really can't wait, check out the beta channel in the meantime.

    Here’s a quick list of what’s new:

    • The start page has a new design, with Speed Dial on the left, and a news feed with channels you can configure on the right.
    • A “Reader mode” for news articles, which can be toggled per article or set permanently in the Settings.
    • A personal corner in the browser (tap on the “person” icon in the bottom right) where you can find your offline pages, bookmarks, history and downloads. You can also sign in here to sync your Speed Dial, bookmarks, tabs and typed history across your devices.
    • A three-dots menu in the top right with Data Savings, Find in Page, Share, and a brand-new “Add to” submenu.
    • Reorganized Settings: we’ve arranged things in a more logical order, and there’s a dedicated “News” section to fine-tune how your start page should look, whether you want notifications, etc.
    • A “Full screen” option that hides the bottom toolbar when scrolling the page.
    • A “Copy and search” widget that allows you to perform a quick search whenever you copy something in other apps.
    • You can set another search engine as your default.
    • Improved support for progressive web apps, including a number of bug fixes.

    What we’re currently working on:

    • A layout switcher for those who want to use the tablet UI on a phone.
    • An option to change news feed language.
    • A way to let you select a folder of choice for downloads.
    • An engine upgrade to the latest Chromium.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks!

  • Hi, just updated in my Samsung tablet. Nice but

    1. Where's back and forward buttons? Or don't I see them. Or have I missed something.
    2. Too many taps to use my bookmarks.
    3. Would like to have very easy way to clear history.
My phone wont't see this update ...

Looks like devs don't read what users write and occur

  • Can't test it yet.

-Is the problem where tapping sync causes the browser to minimize fixed?

-Is the problem with the unresponsive folder tiles (does not respond to tapping) fixed?

-Can I sync my other speed dials?

-Tab selector problems (hanging) are fixed?

@andreasbovens If you 'd be so kind to provide a changelog and a version number like with opera desktop it would be so helpful.

Unresponsive folders indeed. To open it you have to clik on its name, tapping on folder icon doesn't work.

Wow that it is indeed, from what I see from beta. Who have thought about that insane regression and has put it to stable, it blows my mind. I hope it's only a bug, it can't be something else, it can't be!!!

Clearly devs don't read these posts and bugs tickets at all or the don't mind what they release... I've reported all these bugs and glitches and you can see result...

  • "You can set another search engine as your default."

    this is excellent work :-)

  • Are the new features of opera/android all allready in opera beta /android realized?

  • Why change things that were good?

    1. The new bottom bar reduces space for visibility of the pages and if I enable the full screen option then I have to make scroll for make the bar visible for use it. Why not have an option for the user to choose whether to use the bottom bar or have those buttons in the menu as before?

    2. When I open a new tab, I would like the Speed Dial will be displayed as before.

    3. Before, we can tap on the arrow of a search suggestion for avoid to launch the searching and only put the text on the search box. Why have you removed that?

I think this new version has no new interesting features and instead is full of drawbacks in usability.

This is the first time that I'm thinking about switching to another browser.

  • If I update to the soon-to-be-released new Opera for Android, and don't like it, can I reinstall the previous version over the newly installed newest version?

    Thinking ahead.
