keyboard shortcuts to switch tabs not working in Google Sheets

If I try to use keyboard shortcuts to switch tabs to the left or right ('Switch right through tabs') while editing Google Spreadsheets the shortcuts are not working. They work fine in the same scenario in Chrome.

Any hint?

This will not work on sites where editing is possible. Then focus is automatically on the page, so pressing keyboard shortcuts will invoke typing instead.

So is there a way to make the shortcuts work?
Chrome can handle that.

Otherwise, it's a serious productivity issue.
