But something in the beta is ... If I give a timestamp of a log in attempt, can the server side be looked at for a possible reason?
Version: 40.0.2308.3 - Opera is up to date
Update stream: beta
System: Mac OS X 10.11.6 64-bit -

So .. Clicking on Sync Sign in, Instead of logging in with my credentials, I created a new account .. and viola, I was logged in. Then I thought that it was a special character in my password (contained '{'), so I changed my password to remove special characters and still not able to sign in. Weird .. I'm going to delete my login and in 7 days will attempt to create it .. We'll see how that goes.

Nothing to speak about .. The About tab has a lot of "Uninitialized" and the other tabs are empty ..
I just downloaded Opera 39 on the Mac and have no issue signing into sync. So it's something related to the v40 beta

I'm having the same issue. Running the following version:
39.0.2256.48 on Mac OS X 10.11.6 64-bit
opera://sync-internals/ just shows that I'm disassociated. Not logged in.

It would be beneficial if the Sync Protocol Log would reflect a (un)successful login attempt. If I sign in with a wrong password, I get the same error as a correct password - "An Error has Occurred .. Please try again", Perhaps detailing what the error is would be beneficial.
Thanks
@rlh1533 - I have no issues signing into sync with v39 .. Did you try to log into the web site "auth.opera.com" or "sync.opera.com" to verify your login credentials?

Opera beta 40.0.2308.11 on Win 8.1, sync can't login. Credentials verified via sync.opera.com/web/.
New account with simple password did not help.Opera beta 40.0.2308.3 on Fedoara 24: when Opera started, sync can login for a minute, then error:

I have the issue at home: Opera 40 up-to-date running on OS X 10.9, failing to sign in and sync. It has been broken since July 2016 or earlier.
The opera://sync-internals page reports an unrecoverable error (BackendInitialize failure), which seems related to the Chrome engine. Maybe the local data have been corrupted in some way, however I don't know how to repair that.Checking on <sync.opera.com/web/>, remote data are OK. At work I use Opera 40 running on Win7, and this one signs in and syncs alright.
