I've seen many bug reports about this issue. You guys need to completely uninstall the opera version, then reinstall a new version. This is because a .dll file has been broken.

Removed Opera Stable, Opera Next and Opera Developer. Deleted each program folder.

Tried to install new Opera Developer -> no success, i.e. crash before installer options dialog.

You need to remove the registry entries it/they create too, by using some registry cleaning software such as Ccleaner for example or manually edit the registry yourself and remove them individually.

This is assuming you are using Windows and not MacOS as your operating system.

Oh and if you do end up using Ccleaner or the like, be a little careful it does not remove wanted settings/passwords/cookies from your other software install on your machine.

EDIT: Ok, just read your other posts in this thread, so Windows it is, XP specifically.

If the broken DLL file is included in the installer, uninstalling previous versions won't do any good.

Welp, guess I'll be the guinea pig and give it a shot. I was able to transfer my Next profile to a stable install of Opera so I shouldn't lose my speed dial, bookmarks and passwords.

…and boom goes the dynamite. I completely uninstalled all traces of Opera Next, ran two different registry cleaning services, manually went through to remove any remaining Opera Next references (none that I could find) and tried to reinstall Opera Next.

                Same error.

It's definitely a problem with the installer, NOT our existing copies.

Now I'm without access to Next -or- Developer, luckily I copied my profile to the Opera Stable that did install with no issues. (I was secretly hoping the stable channel install would fix whatever dll issues the others had… No dice.)

                  +1

Cleaning registry but still same error. Now, new Opera Stable 20.0.1387.91 is the only version that works. Maybe one of the last ones? XP support ends, maybe they wait until it sleeps...

                    Some WinXP working - http://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2014/04/opera-developer-22-now-easier-update-ever/#comment-1316731766

maybe this is CPU issue? some SSE2,SSE3 optimisation?
On my PIII 1Ghz and AMD Sempron 2800+ with Win XP SP3 now I can install only Opera Stable.
Last Developer working version was 21.0.1419.0

Maxnrws, I think you're on to something. In the last few days, I began receiving a message in Chrome saying I would no longer be getting updates due to them no longer supporting my hardware.

After digging through Google's impossibly stupid support forums, I came across some info that Google is dropping support for CPUs that don't have SSE2 or better. This means a Pentium 4 or above from Intel or an Athlon 64 or Opteron and newer from AMD.

My processor is an Athlon XP, which apparently does not support SSE2. This is also the main roadblock to me installing Windows 8.1, apparently.

You noted you have a PIII and I bet the others with issues have older processors as well.

I was not surprised to "hit the wall" with Windows XP support, or to not be able to play modern games or use Google Maps with its WebGL requirements. But I didn't honestly expect Chrome and Opera to end up getting stuck this soon because of something like this. It's very disappointing considering how utterly adequate my hardware is for doing so many other things.

Athlon XP 1700+ in my case.

There is no problem with the installer, I installed Opera Stable 20, Next 21 and Developer 22 and all worked fine. I am using Windows 8.1 on Intel core 2 duo.

Had updated Win XP to Win 7 in January which worked fine. Later Opera stable 20 run perfectly. Launcher_lib.dll problem started with the update to 21. Update to next 22 does also not work. Seems really to be CPU problem. I have got an AMD Athlon 3000+ which does not support SSE2. - Chrome (version 34.0.1847.131 m) gives an information that future updates are not supported. - Would be fine if Opera developer could confirm the CPU issue (or better resolve the problem if possible).

A developer did acknowledge the change - in a comment reply on one of their blog posts. It's so buried I couldn't even begin to find it again if I tried.

I've switched to Firefox on the desktop and even though it pales compared to 12.16 at least I can still get security updates.

I should uninstall both Opera versions AND Chrome in protest of this change but I have one website that is specifically designed to work in Chrome so I have to keep it even though it's not getting updates.

Its not just XP that it fails on, it fails on vista too. I finally tore it all out after repeated failures and threw it away. When they finally fix it, I will try it again. In the meantime, Firefox & Chrome take the day…
