Opera reloads tabs once you focus on them when not in off-road mode

I'm having a huge problem with Opera Mobile. I usually use it in off-road mode to save some space and time, but when I'm on WiFi I would really like to be able to use websites with all their features.
But tabbed browsing is absolutely atrocious with this browser in the default mode. Every time a tab loses focus and regains it later it gets refreshed. Why would it do that? It makes absolutely no sense. Is there a way to fix this nonsense?
