im thinking of switching from firefox to opera, and for the most part have managed to find replacment add-ons. (though inability to access half of them or re-arrange the order of their icons beside the address bar is an annoyance) but, a real deal breaker is that there seems to be no facility for backing up bookmarks and passwords securly.

i found one rather poor add-on for exporting bookmarks, which doesnt save the folder structure, making a royal mess. though at least those are backed up.

however having spent the last 2 hours searchin, i have not found a single method of backing up passwords that will work with any version of opera past 12.X. the closest thing to a method of backing up passwords i have found, seems to be lastpass, and the fact it works by uploading my passwords to 3rd party storage is utterly unacceptable to me. since not even banks can be trusted to not let customer data get compromised.

at this point im wondering if copying the AppData folders entirely would be the only way to do this. but then, im not sure if that would allow me to restore the files should i need to put them on a new computer, or even if that is where opera keeps this data.

      tl;dr
is there a method to backup critical data (bookmarks and passwords) on my own backup device, in a way that will allow me to recover this info if my computer is damaged or the data gets corrupted? preferably something as simple as MozBackup.

having just checked, even opera's own help page documentation only applies to version 12.

And file backup program can handle this by simply backing up Opera profile folder. You can also do this manually by copying said folder.

The best one I know if is V7 Bookmarks. Having a good HTML export is only one of its many features.

That would be problematic. Opera and most chromish browsers use a password encryption/hashing scheme involving the user's account/Windows password; if you attempt to retrieve passwords from a different user account or using a different computer, retrieval will generally fail to work. Over the years and through a variety of computer (and backup) failures, I've found the safest thing is to copy all passwords onto paper and keep a master copy in a safe, secure place. One key reason is that if there is a critical need to urgently access something password-protected using a different computer while a failed computer is being restored, that written list may be the only thing at hand.

il give this v7 bookmarks thing a go, thats something at least. REALLY not looking forward to the idea of having to write down the passwords i have. especially when they are so conveniently backed up in firefox.
