How to turn off Opera AutoUpdate permanently

Every time I start up Opera I get a message box pop up asking me to sign into a proxy server to allow Opera AutoUpdate to run. And when I press the cancel button I get about three minutes before the message box pops up again etc etc etc. I've read through the forum trying to apply the settings that have been recommended in various similar sounding requests but none have worked for me. Updating the launcher shortcut to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\launcher.exe" --check-for-update-interval=0 or --disable-update didn't work for me and the Preferences facility in earlier versions of Opera seems to be absent from Opera 33. Someone in the Opera developer community ought to know where they hid the switch off the f@@king irritating AutoUpdate message box launcher. Please put us out of the misery before we all migrate to Chrome or Mozilla.
Thanks

Delete Opera autoupdate task in Task Scheduler, delete opera_autoupdate.exe in Opera versioned folder under ProgramFiles. Currently there are no known settings/switchs/flags, able to stop this stupid autoupdate thing.
