The first Opera developer's build this year - 36.0.2106.0

"This release is packed with features, some of them expected already by the ones who like to play with the flags, but we still hope there are going to be some nice surprises here.

Start Page layout change

The Start Page features quite a number of changes. In the attempt to increase ergonomics, the start page navigation panel is now positioned on the left side. Apart from that, we decided to merge News and Speed Dial, creating one simplified and configurable Start Page (please note the “Customize start page” cogwheel option in the top right corner):

Extension expander

We also enabled the extension expander for all those who tend to have many extensions and would like to access all of them even if they don’t fit on the toolbar, without having to refer to opera:extensions. Please note that the screenshot below contains quite a number of random (but nonetheless great for sure) extensions which are there only for demonstration purposes.

Opera UI for Windows 10 and touch screens

Windows 10 users, particularly these using touch screens, should notice some substantial UI improvements. These are currently hidden behind the flag #windows-10-skin but we decided to mention these anyway because the change, in our view, should be really pleasing.

First of all, you can now control whether you want the system or Opera colors by switching the setting in Browser -> Show system color on top bar.

Second, the touch users will have additional icon for the full screen mode:

And, touch users will notice bigger context menus when Opera was activated by touch:

Bookmark deduplication improvements

Along with a few minor fixes, we have identified and fixed DNA-47472. Wit this fix, bookmark deduplication should now work more smoothly, and we are hopeful for a flawless performance. Please check out for yourselves and see if it works for you!

We have also fixed a few crashes and updated the Chromium version to 49.0.2593.0.

Known issues:

- We are aware of a renderer crash on pages containing videos with audio. This is Chromium-specific and already reported,

- It is impossible to configure News (country and categories) until you turn the flag #personalized-news-start-page on – the fix is on its way and should be available in the next developer release,

- At rare occasions, Speed Dial may be broken on the fresh USB installation. Relaunching Opera fixes the issue.

New builds for Mac, and Windows - 36.0.2114.0

For the today’s release, we have the following highlights:

Users’ suggestions

Yes. A separate section only for the users’ suggestions being implemented. Go and see for yourself:

- Behold – you can now have a completely clean start-page. However, to fully utilize this feature, you have to go to Settings -> Browser, scroll down and enable “Show advanced settings”. Then, open the start-page, click “Customize Start Page” and enjoy the ability to turn off everything:

Note that without the “Show advanced settings” check-box enabled, you can only turn off themes and news.

- We have also removed the white underlay from the news page so that the background is either generally clean and themed. Do you like it now?

- The bookmarks bar folder icon has been updated to conform with the Opera visual integrity. Thanks for your input!

News configuration

As you can see on the screenshot attached above, now you can configure news from the start-page configuration panel right away – we have fixed the nuisance from the previous release

Themes configuration

The updated Themes carousel now appears in both the Settings->Browser panel and the “Show Advanced Settings” start-page configuration panel. You can select from both the installed themes and the Opera online themes:

Of course, the previous method of Opera theming is also still available.

Other features

The ones below are currently hidden under flags, so please check them out when you feel explorative:

- If you have some substantial history, you can try out the flag #personalized-news-start-page, and see how it works for you after you click through the configuration steps:Personalized News

- If you have a slow connection (around 1Mb/s or less), news can be auto-supported by the Turbo2 mode without having to explicitly turn on Opera Turbo. To enable that, please switch the #turbo-for-news-on-startpage flag.

- To test our current state of flawless switching between internal pages, please enable the #start-page-web-ui-components flag.

We have also updated the Chromium version to 49.0.2612.0."

Known issues

- DNA-48596 On Mac, Opera freezes when going to the fullscreen mode with more than one extension in the expander menu,

- DNA-48602 More history content is not loaded when generating history and going back to the History tab,

- DNA-48599 opera:activity infinite loading when the user is not logged into the sync service,

- DNA-48607 On HiDPI displays, the page scrollbar is incorrectly scaled.

This release is the last 36.x based one.

Highlights:

- We fixed the issue where it was impossible to put the graphic display to sleep. Please verify if it works for you now.

- Some page crashes are now fixed.

- A few visual adjustments to internal pages.

- Fixed inability to navigate to internal pages from the menu.

- Fixed resizing Opera after auto update.

- It is now possible to copy and paste bookmarks in the bookmarks view.

I moved on from Firefox to Opera and I am very happy with it. :love: But there are a few minor things I think could be improved (IMHO):

a directly bookmarks access from the top UI;
when cleaning cookies, the ability clean them by the websites they are related. Otter browser have it and it is very useful. They are indexed by website;
again on bookmarks, when accessing from menu dialog, I really do not understand the necessity of it to start from the "My Folders" folder and not directly on the bookmarks inside that folder.
a option to have icon only bookmarks on bookmarks bar without the needing to delete information. It used to have on the "old" Opera, including the ability to center them.

Yes, basically a button but with a dialog, more like the sync button. A fast (one click) access to the bookmarks without the need to change the current window. In others words identically that we already have on menu but with the fast access from the top UI.

Es wäre schön, wenn Opera Videos, die es bisher nur in einem eigenen TAB darstellen konnte, auch DIREKT abspielen könnte.
