Very sorry your problem. Not an expert but when I have un installed a program like a browser, I do these things:

Uninstall, in the Control Panel / Delete the program folder from the C Drive Programs (x86) for 32 bit / Go to User App Data folders [Local and Remote], delete the program folders / Get to "regedit" {hopefully you know what that means} and get to both HKEY_Current_User and HKEY_Local-Machine, deleting the everything you see THAT SAYS 'OPERA'.

Again, I'm no expert but I've done this to totally uninstall a program...then, after a Restart I've never had any trouble Re-Installing.

Best of luck; Others many have different/better ideas for you....

Oh... Forgot. Before complete deletion, go to App Data, ROAMING {NOT 'Remote'...that was incorrect}, copy off your Bookmarks files! You can re-insert them after your successful reinstall.

My laptop is a HP Pavilion ze4500 with an AMD Athlon XP2500+ processor running at 1.86GHz. I'm still running Windows XP & Opera version 12.16. Can someone tell me what the system requirements for Opera 33? When I try to download & install, I get the error message: "This program requires a computer that supports SSE2 instructions".

You are rocking a system with an 11 year old CPU. SSE2 instructions are required for Opera 33 and your processor does not support them. Specifically the Athlon XP series of CPUs did not have support for SSE2 because it was developed by Intel and AMD didn't immediately add that feature to all of their CPUs. Sorry mate.

Perceptually, it's been said that digital technology and devices evolve about 4 times faster than we conceive them to. That is, an 11-year-old computer is closer to a 44-year-old appliance in terms of how it compares with what is going on currently. It may still function, and for a few tasks, perhaps function quite well. But it's fallen far behind where the current state of technology exists, meaning that new accessories (software or hardware) often won't work with it. For perspective, in 2003 when your CPU was announced to the marketplace, my Micron Win98 system was only 5 years old and the WinXP OS had only been released for 2 years. Since then, the world has seen Vista, Win7, Win8, Win8.1, and Win10 emerge. Whatever one's opinion of any of those, they and the corresponding hardware technology collectively represent a massive evolution in technology and associated protocols that have inevitably come to bear on application software like web browsers.

Thank you for the information. Interestingly (for me anyway), not long after my previous post I got a notification to download a "newer version of Opera" (not the newest, but I still get that notification too) that turned out to be Opera 12.17.
