very serious issue with Opera

Works fine in Opera 27. Just confirmed it myself in windows 8.1. Your version of Opera is going on 2 years out of date, maybe its time to update? Its not like the devs are going to patch a version thats several releases out of date to fix that kind of problem.

Are you really sure of that? That is, are you sure Windows is correctly saving a file with a total pathname longer than 255 characters (or 260, depending on one's interpretation of nul symbols)? That limit is a Windows API limitation, even in Win 8.1, and while one can work around it in Win8 versions by shell manipulations, it's not a normal functionality. Or perhaps you mean "works fine" in terms of Opera clearly flagging the too-long filename?
How an app like a browser is supposed to handle a violation of Windows file-naming rules is a question of how gracefully the app is designed to pass the max character violation alert through to the user. Windows itself will put up a notification message in many cases, but the app may conceivably interfere with that.

Opera 27 is entirely different product.
I know. Its also a dead product and isn't going to be updated anymore. Thats why I told them to update.

Yes. If you try and save a file name longer then 232 characters using Opera 27 in Windows 8.1 you get an error saying the file name is not valid. Since their complaint was that they weren't receiving any warnings about the too long file name and the more modern version of Opera has that covered I'd say its taken care of.

Thanks for clearing that up...

pa421: This relates to Windows? Better to say Filesystem, or? As you can even frustrate the average win user if you save webpages under opera presto under linux on an ntfs filesystem where the names contains illegitimate characters for ntfs - under windows you cannot access those files, you cannot delete them, etc. (whilst, even if they are out of specs for ntfs, ubu has no problems in not only writing them, but also in accessing 'em again) ... well, it is always neat to see how people react to such files if I forgot to rename them before handing them over to a pure windows user
Now I have to remember that next time I have the time I shall see what happens if I write a >255characters filename under *nix to an ntfs filesystem... -

shandra, it relates to Windows, not NTFS. NTFS has a total path length capacity of 32,767 characters. Windows put an arbitrary cap on that.
The version of Opera that is the subject of this thread is 26.0.1656.60 and it says "Opera is up to date." I thought "Opera Presto" was a nickname for this version, but I guess I was wrong. And subsequent to making this thread, it happened to me again. Hours later when I saw the folder in which the Webpage, Complete file was saved, I saw that only the images/stylesheets folder saved, and not the webpage. The old Opera threw up a series of nondescript warnings when this would happen. The second or third time this happened, I thought to check the destination folder and it was then that I saw that only a fraction of the content was saving (the images/stylesheets folder, sometimes completely empty).
In my original post I stated that Chrome has a very nondescript warning about this my not indicating a complete download, however when I just re-tested this, Chome did in fact indicate a complete download, and the one anomaly was that the Show in Folder option simply didn't do anything if cliked. Chrome and Opera 26.0.1656.60 share the same behavior, because Opera, as well, indicates a completed download, but when the "show in folder" is clicked -- which is a simple grayish button (stylish!) -- the download listing simply disappears, that's all that happens. One can test all their downloads by always clicking the gray button afterwards to see if it actually downloaded.
